Essay on Gerrymandering
English 1101
January 22, 2014
Gerrymandering
Gerrymandering is defined as the establishment of boundaries of voting districts with the main
objective of determining the partial or complete outcome of elections. Gerrymanders are designed
with the main objective of insuring the defeat of specific individuals or electing political allies.
There are a number of objectives of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is usually carried out in order
to allow for the reelection of incumbents or for the party in power to win more seats in an election
than the number to which its percentage of the total vote properly entitles it. This only serves to
subvert the will of the people since it denies them the amount of voting power that they are
entitled

The resulting districts are normally referred to as gerrymanders and they are composed of pro–
incumbents and partisans. Partisan gerrymandering involves the redrawing of political lines in order
to favor a given political party
. Incumbent gerrymandering involves the redrawing of boundaries in
a bipartisan manner that is aimed at benefiting the incumbents on both sides of the aisle (Snider
2012).
The gerrymandering process allows the majority party within a given state to maximize the number
of seats it can win in the future elections
. This leads it into creating as many districts as possible
where it constitutes the majority. By doing this, those who support the minority parties are packed
into the remaining few districts. This results in more electoral security for the minority party and
less electoral security for the members of the minority parties. It also produces greater homogeneity
within the districts while reducing competition for the house seats. Apart from the positive effects of
gerrymandering, there are a number of negative effects associated with partisan gerrymandering.
This process results in more competitive districts when compared to the non competitive districts
and this in turn ambiguously affects polarization. Partisan gerrymandering also affects the state
legislative electoral competitiveness as it has severe partisan biases. Excessive partisan
gerrymandering is the violation of the equal protection clause since it consigns the

Do TV Shows Like 16 and Pregnant Promote or Discourage Teenage Pregnancy?
Teenage pregnancy has become a major issue in today's society for our adolescents. This is a major
problem for all who are involved. It creates hurt and a struggle for on the parents, especially for the
mother (Gonchar and Schulten). Also for the parent(s) of the teenager this creates struggles for them
because more often than not, they end up with the load of caring and looking after the child while
the teenage parents are at school or out doing other things that teenagers do. Raising a child as a
teenager is not easy. Teen parents are more likely to struggle to deal with parenthood, and the

The television show 16 and Pregnant was initially created to try to symbolize the hardship of being a
teenage parent (Taylor). The stories of these young girls are often times very similar being that they
have a miserable nine months of pregnancy just to give birth as a single mother, no longer with the
father of their child. This show displays the sorrow and struggle that the mother has in just the first
few weeks into being a new mother.
On the other hand, some view that these types of shows somewhat "glorify" the reality of having a
baby as a teenager. Both Teen Moms and 16 and Pregnant offer the young teenage girls that they
document great deals of money in order to record their pregnancy, birth giving, and first couple of
weeks of motherhood. This in itself, to some teenagers, shows that it isn't all that bad. Many teen
moms believe that they could possibly become one of the documented females if they end up in the
situation of being a teen parent and could earn money off of it and a little fifteen minutes of fame
(Henson). Also, they think that they could be featured in Teen Moms, the spinoff of 16 and
Pregnant. This would just introduce even more money to the teen. The show is not intentionally
trying to promote teenage pregnancy. This is just the viewpoint that some uneducated teenagers take
from watching it. This is definitely not the realistic and commonsensical way of viewing teenage
pregnancy.

Argumentative Essays
Failure is the step towards success. Do you agree?
It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a
motivator for a person to keep trying until the objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled.
Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However, one should
not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. Failure in
the beginning can often be a powerful incentive to reassess one's position in wanting to achieve the
particular aims; to analyse whether the purpose is worth the trouble the person has to undergo and
the whether the obstacles are surmountable. Practical and

Another disadvantage of being an only is that he lacks companionship. He has no brother or sister to
confide in. Growing up as an only child can be very lonely. If you have siblings you will have to
share everything, so you get less; but you also get less of the bad things. Siblings can support and
comfort each in times of trouble. The elder siblings learn to care for the younger ones and the
younger ones learn to respect their elder siblings and have someone to look up to besides their
parents. You are more balanced person than an only child. Another advantage of having siblings is
that your parents' attention is divided among your siblings. As a result, there is less pressure on you
to perform well, be it academically or in other areas. Having siblings also means that you have
companionship, the joy of caring and sharing, and security. I, personally, am happy that I am not an
only child.
Students should not take up part time jobs. Discuss.
Nowadays, students love to have part–time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to
gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before,
teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were
actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the teenagers
nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the

Abortion
In 2008, twelve women taking resident in the U.S. died due to legal abortions performed during the
second or third trimesters of pregnancy. Abortion should be available to all females living in the
United States, but must be a legal citizen to have late abortions, which are during the second or third
trimesters of pregnancy
. Abortion is a right that women have, and the Fourth Amendment "Search
and Seizure" supports it. Fewer women will exercise abortion if it is kept legal in the U.S. Late
abortions are dangerous, so only legal citizens of the U.S. may have second or third trimester
abortions. In the 1820's, various ideas against abortions began

Many CPCs (Crisis Pregnancy Centers) mislead women into thinking that abortions cause breast
cancer, that birth–control pills cause abortions, and that abortion can lead to sterility. CPCs do
anything to talk a woman out of having a legal abortion. Late abortions are performed during the
second or third trimesters. A method of late abortion is a saline injection. This is when a needle is
inserted into the uterus through the
