Literary Elements I applied characterization, narrative point of view, and symbolism elements when reading Doris Lessing's story, "The Old Chief Mshlanga". The elements helped understand the story in a better way. I used the quote, "It seemed it was only necessary to let free that respect I felt when I was talking with old Chief Mshlanga, to let both black and white people meet gently, with tolerance for each other's differences: it seemed quite easy” can be easily analyzed by utilizing the three elements to explore the themes present in the literature.
I began by focusing on the characterization component in the literature. The little girl who makes observations and offers her ideas serves as the protagonist. She transforms into a more empathetic adult from a terrified and prejudiced youngster. She contemplates the likelihood of racial groups like blacks and whites living in harmony in the passage. The protagonist is able to widen her recognition of humanity through the quote and challenge racial stereotypes and preconceptions while doing so. The narrative point of view was then a technique I used. The quote demonstrates the use of the narrative point of view as a literary element in the story. The story is told in the first person, allowing the reader to experience her
thoughts and feelings immediately. When the protagonist reflects on her relationship with the chief, the narrative point of view is crucial in letting readers understand her point of view.
Furthermore, symbolism is another literary element that is present in Lessing's story. The narrator illuminates the titular character Chief Mshlanga through the quote to portray him as a complex and dignified character. Chief Mshlanga's presence in the story represents the resistance within a system of oppression and the understanding of the racial connection between different boundaries. Therefore, the quote can be viewed as the culmination of the symbolism of Chief Mshlanga as the narrator realizes the power of recognizing others.
In conclusion, characterization, narrative point of view, and symbolism are the key elements chosen to understand the story's themes and meanings. The protagonist's realization
that respect and tolerance are necessary for people of different backgrounds to coexist is a significant moment in the story. I used the element to analyze a quote highlighting the importance of peaceful relations between different boundaries.
