Jennifer Lopez 12/16/23 LIT 327 Study Guide Parenting, Immigration, and Alienation 1) How does being separated from her mother affect Darling psychologically? Culturally? Treat the phone call to her mother as well as the more abstract section about immigrants and their parents, “How They Lived” They way the separation between Darling and her mother affected Darling psychologically by leaving so much loss and ache. In the excerpt it states that, “I miss her so much sometimes it makes me dizzy but then there is nothing I can do about it. I can tell from how she sounds that everything is alright, so I relax.” As a person who has immigrant family members it’s hard to hear their voice but not be able to see them physically and leaves a huge ache in your heart knowing i can’t see them in person. The distance between Darling and mother has also culturally affected her gradually because of the upbringing of Darling’s change of her accent when speaking to her mother on the phone, “Yes, you’ve been busy because I hear now you have a job and a wife and children to take care of. And I see that America has taught you to speak English to your mother, and with that accent. He-he-he, so you are trying to sound white now! .... it’s hard to tell if she is serious or not. I start to call her crazy but I hold it and tell myself that it is one of the American things I don’t want to do.” Another thing I can relate too is that having Spanish speaking parents knowing little to no English is hard. Because as a latina, you experience things such as, “speak in Spanish so we can understand what you're saying” or “stop speaking a language, it makes it seem like you are talking behind our backs about us.” But we got used to it. It’s mainly our non-English speaking grandparents to them it’s like we're speaking in gibberish. 2) TJ, the main first-generation American in this novel, has problems with his parents. What are they, and what causes them? How do TJ’s decisions affect Uncle Kojo? TK has had various problems when it comes to Uncle Kojo. One of them being that after TK left, Uncle Kojo stopped eating after TK left. Uncle Kojo struggles to maintain a united family after TK leaves since he decided to join the army. “ whenever he is with someone from his country, everything about him is different —his laugh, his talk, his eating—it’s like something cuts him open to reveal this other person I don’t even know.” This is what Uncle Kojo feels when he’s around his people but nwo that TK is in America he prefers to do things American way and Uncle Kojo is not very comfortable with that. My parents are the same thing. Somethings can’t change when we come from different countries. Most of the
time my parent always have to have a certain dish or something that reminds them of home.
