Themes in The Yellow Wallpaper
The short story by MaCharlotte Gilman draws inspiration from her own experience in life. She writes about challenges that women face especially when undergoing mental struggles. In her work, she uses an unnamed character to symbolize the general experience that is relatable to every woman who understands the feeling of being under oppression. Therefore, she is a voice
of many in one as she highlights the theme of oppression and consequent subjectivity that leads her to journal her feelings. Male chauvinism is a major theme in the story where the narrator's physician husband ironically disregards her sickness and perceives her to be pretentious. The latter causes emotional
abuse which is a minor theme. Gender inequality also characterizes the chauvinistic tendency of men towards women who are limited to domestic roles and denied the freedom to pursue their interests. A sub-theme of mistrust manifests in the cynicism and apathy that the narrator witnesses from her husband. She feels dejected and worsens instead of getting better. About wellness and health, Charlotte Gilman explores the facets of health by capturing emotional, social, psychological and spiritual aspects besides physical wellness. Therefore, domestic abuse through emotional and psychological torture is a theme in the discussion. As she ponders about the struggles in her matrimony and vocation, social expectations, and ambitions, she emphasizes on the imposed confinement by her husband with all freedoms revoked. However, she finds inspiration in the room’s wallpaper and defies by concealing her actions to write successfully in secret. The theme of defiance in pursuit of change arises in her statement, “I
did write for a while in spite of them” Nonetheless, change is the overriding theme because she protests her situation as she desperately needs positive change from what she has experienced in her life.
