Josiah Lazar ENG-2033 Professor Kieloch 2-13-23 Word Count: 351 M4 Short Writing Assignment Rip Van Winkle Something that I found to be unbelievable about the Rip Van Winkle story is that he fell asleep for twenty years under a tree. If he was in a coma for twenty years in a hospital, I would believe it. But under a tree? Something that I found to be believable in this story is that he was a slothful man. He was being slothful when he “would rather starve on a penny then work for a pound” (Irving). He would also “eat white or brown bread” (Irving) meaning that he did not care. I found it unbelievable in The Legend of the Sleeping Hollow was the headless horseman or the Galloping Hessian. It is impossible for someone to be riding a horse and be alive. Something that I noticed in this story was the man being afraid of the headless horse man. If I was being chased by a headless horseman, I would be scared to death. Paul Revere’s Ride I agree that this story was modified. I feel that it would be a better story if it was not modified by Longfellow. I think that Longfellow should not have added situations to the story that are not true, because it is not what happened. If it is a fiction book, then you should add anything that you want to the story because fiction is made up. A writer would add things to their story to make it more of an interesting story. Star Spangled Banner When I hear the Star-Spangled Banner, it makes me feel glad that we have people out there fighting to save our country. It also makes me sad because there are people that kneel, do not take their hats off, and they won’t put their hand on their chest. My parents show support to the country by hanging an American flag from their front porch. Legend of Sleepy Hollow The relationship between the Galloping Hessian and Brom Bones was Brom Bones made to light of Galloping Hessian. According to Washington Irving, “Brom Bones made light of the
Galloping Hessian” (Irving). Based off of that information, it sounds like Brom Bones made up the Galloping Hessian.
