1 Name Instructor Course Date The Power of the Dog In The Power of the Dog, sound effects have been used effectively to convey the intended message to the viewers. The film uses various sound effects that highlight intimacy and details. A good example of this naturalistic soundscape is at the beginning of the film. As Phil first enters the house, his boots and spurs can be heard in heightened detail ( Allmendinger, 10). This heightened sound of his boots suggests his intended masculine dominance. His presence is felt through the sound of his boots projected throughout the house. This incident gives the audience some insights into Phil's character through this sound effect. Another instance in the film where sound effects have been used effectively is when Rose enters the house to practice the piano. Rose is motivated to practice playing the piano because Gorge wants her to perform in an upcoming event. The audience is forced to hear the sound of the wind through the door. These sound effects suggest that Rose is isolated in the room to practice in private. This isolation elicits mixed emotions in the audience as they know her vulnerability due to Phil's intimidation. The audience is concerned about what is going to happen to her in the isolation state.
2 Similarly, sound effects have been used when a knife is used to slice the raw leather. As a knife cuts through the leather, the audience experiences a sense of tension and fear due to the low-key sound that is produced. Similarly, the film provides a close detail of Rose and Phil's footsteps as they engage in a dance. The sounds produced by their footsteps as they dance used symbolically in this film. They show the romance that the two characters are involved in and also the susceptibility of Rose to Phil's intimidations. This film also has a lot of other specific sound effects that help the audience to have a better understanding of the play. For instance, as the film develops, a scrapping sound is heard as Peter combs his hair while in deep thought (Netflix, 16). This sound is used symbolically to show the troubles that Peter was going through. Similarly, sound effects are used in the film during the braiding of the rope. The sounds produced during this incident suggest that the rope would be used in an activity that would elicit fear and tension among the audience. The use of sound effects in this film is essential because they engage the audience and help them to understand the scenes shown. They emphasize what is on the screen, evoke emotions in the audience, and help deliver key information to viewers. The heightened sound of Phil's boots suggests his intended masculine dominance, giving the audience some insights into Phil's character. Similarly, the close detail of Rose and Phil's footsteps as they engage in a dance evokes emotions in the audience and creates more attention to detail. Overall, the use of sound effects in the film creates a better understanding of different scenes among the audience.
