Things Fall Apart Compare And Contrast Essay
In a society that is presided over by unjust authority, there will always be that one person who
makes it out. The one who decides to change the way him and his neighbors live in the eye of the
community. There are those who push themselves to their limits but still do not achieve fully, yet in
a way they are just a catalyst for the movement, they are the ones adding the next step on the ladder
for the person below them. In 1984 they had Winston Smith, Things Fall Apart they had Okonkwo,
and in The Road they had the father. All characters in each novel were conquering not a quest set
upon them, but a quest they had set upon themselves. They felt like they had what it took to push
past their own limitations and break through the societal restrictions placed on them. In each novel
the hero had a quest in which they followed for the betterment of their lives and the people around
them, a personal quest given upon themselves to acquire what they want more than anything. The

While the little boy is still young and is incapable of contributing, the father has his own quest to
survive while safekeeping the boy and providing for him as much as possible. The father's wife
doubted his motive to helping his son survive through everything but he wanted to prove the mother
wrong, he wanted her to see that he would do whatever he could to make sure the boy stayed alive.
The father also felt the boy was given to him by god, and it was his duty to protect him. "He
mistrusted all of that. He said the right dreams for a man in peril were dreams of peril and all else
was the call of languor and of death." (McCarthy 162) Here the man is explaining that his dreams
are just a distraction, and that if he is happy in this

Differences Between The Veldt Book And Movie
Hannah Vu–8FA
Many popular movies these days are based on world famous books and stories, like "The Veldt" by
Ray Bradbury. Some movies may be very similar to its story, but usually they're quite different. This
is usually caused because the movie will be too long if they try to include all the details that the
book provides. But is it completely true? This is why I will be comparing a short story to it's short
film, called "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury.
First, the characters, in this story they're five main characters, one of them being George Hadley, the
father, George is striker in the story and consistent with his decision, and Lydia Hadley, the mother
was really paranoid but became more laid back towards the end. In the movie though they switched
roles. George was not consistent with his decisions and was very easygoing at the start of

The plot had some major differences as well as its similarities, for example, when Lydia was
frightened by the lions and when Peter and Wendy "killed" their parents. The film did follow the
same storyline and had the same plot but also had some slight differences here and there, for
example ... In the story, George and Lydia found a wallet and a scarf in the nursery, but they found a
purse in the movie. The children didn't land in the "space ship" and they didn't even mention the
plastic carnival. There were no whining or jumping on couch's as referenced in the story when the
kids heard the news about locking up the nursery, they just got mad and ran towards the nursery.
When the Parents were supposedly chased by lions, Lydia wasn't crying, the story made it seem
more dramatic than it appeared in the video. As well as Peter called George "George" in the movie
instead of Father or Dad, this was not mentioned in the story, but it did show how he didn't really
think of George as his Dad. There were also a little foreshadowing at the end when George told
Lydia to RIP "Rest in peace" then shortly after they

Compare & Contrast: The Rocking–Horse Winner/The Lottery
ENGL 102_B40: Literature and Composition

Gambling, whether for life or money, is risky and success is not guaranteed, even if you 'win'. Two
different tales both involving risk.
1. Gambling for something valuable – One for life and the other for money
2. Characters' Personalities – Paul was hopeful and cared deeply for his family – Tessie while also
hopeful cared more about herself
3. Imagery – Paul: fortunate and hopeful – Tessie: unfortunate and unpleasant
4. Summary: Paul is more successful

Tessie's personality is somewhat similar to Paul's but they also have their differences. Paul is very
hopeful about winning the money his family needs, he has an incredible love for his mother. He is

–races. He has a real gift for picking a winner and it's this attitude
that leads him to make money for his mother and save their house from haunting them. Tessie is also
hopeful, hopeful that she will not 'win' the lottery
. Of course, we find as we read that this doesn't
happen. Tessie does 'win' the lottery and she seems to be the only one that is saddened by this fact.
Little Paul is a very hopeful, fortunate boy. He so vividly pictures the horse races to come while
riding his rocking–horse, it's as if he's in the race himself and the rocking–horse is the winning
horse. In "The Rocking–Horse Winner", Lawrence really paints a imaginative picture with
descriptions such as with Paul's "big blue eyes that had an uncanny cold fire in them", and in "The
Lottery" Jackson paints a picture with words such as The town's children are collecting rocks like
young children regularly do. The men are "speaking of rain, planting, tractors and taxes." The
women are making small talk with one another. It seems like a regular day in a regular town." So, in
both stories the setting is different and the people are different but they have a similarity in the fact
that they are all gambling for something, whether good or bad. In reading these

Hamlet Compare And Contrast Essay
Compare and Contrast Essay Boxes are common inanimate objects that are found in most
households. They are used to store objects that are unwanted or to hold gifts for loved ones. The
theme of love in Hamlet on the other hand is an intense emotion that can not be found in every
relationship. So with all of their differences what makes them alike? Imagine that someone is
unpacking boxes and helping a friend move into their new place. They have just completed
unwrapping all of the dishes and glassware, but failed to see the newspaper that floated past the
trash can and onto the floor behind them. They step backwards and slip on the sheet of newspaper
and fall into a box. The box rips, and they land flat on their back. There is an audible gasp

Even though boxes have multiple uses, according to the article Boxes – Their Importance and Uses
:"Boxes are commonly used as storage." (The Green Book, 2012). Boxes are made to contain things,
so it would be expected that they would be strong and not easily broken. In some instances the box
may become fragile or worn out after being used multiple times. The same applies to the love shown
in hamlet. When people first fall in love the emotion is strong and the relationship can last for what
feels like forever as shown through Gertrude and King Hamlet's love. This is due to how the
"reward system is stimulated through very simple means," so the smallest of touches or "even just
thinking about" them can cause an "increase [in] elevated mood" (Fisher 2013). After time passes
the butterflies and intensity of emotions dies down and there needs to be more effort put into the
relationship to keep it going. This can cause break ups because of how little effort is put into
showing the other person that love still exists in the relationship. The longer a relationship lasts the
more fragile the connection and love between them gets, so if one person is not giving as much
effort as the other because they believe that the other person should do all of the work then the
relationship may fail. Through time and use both boxes and love can become so fragile that they
may not be able to be

substandard schools and unrealized dreams." (With no way out of trouble, more students likely to

Government Compare And Contrast Essay
In the United States of America there exists a constant conflict between the federal government and
the state governments. Despite their differences, the two have a variety of similarities that range
from how they are organized to the types of policies each decides to pass. A major similarity is the
executive branches that exists in both forms of government. While the president is the head of the
executive branch for the federal government, in Texas the governor plays the same role as the
president would. Both of these figures are required to address their respective Congress in order to
give updates and suggestions for the next term year. Today, we will examine President Donald

First, we will start with President Donald Trump's State of the Union. President Trump focuses on a
number of issue ranging from tax reform to national security. A major differentiation between his
speech and Governor Abbott's is the issue of health care. He believes that healthcare needs to be
more affordable and still give citizens the ability to choose their doctors. He plans to resolve the
issue my repealing and replacing Obamacare. The second major issue addressed was national
security. Trump states that illegal immigration is a major problem and should be fixed by moving on
to a merit–based immigration system. This basically means that no one can enter the country unless
they are already able to support their families. Also, by moving to a merit–based immigration
system, Trump believes that millions of jobs will be created and protected, thus bringing down the
unemployment rate. Lastly, Trump focuses on the state of the economy. Trump suggests tax reform
and redistribution as being the sole solution to the United States national debt issues. He proposes a
tax cut for both corporations and the middle class while also raising taxes on foreign trade. Trump
also asked for a trillion dollars from both public and private capital goes towards rebuilding
America's infrastructure. While President Trump focuses on the health care and the economy,

THESIS: In "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell and "Young Goodman Brown" by
Nathaniel Hawthorne, imagery and characterization are employed to illustrate the ever present inner
darkness of humanity. However, the authors set very different themes in how their protagonists
reflect upon and respond to being faced with it. Both men must choose whether they will reject and
confront evil or simply abide it with apathy.
I. The dark imagery used in both stories convert evil into a nearly tangible entity. a. The lack of
visibility in these stories corresponds to the fear felt by both men. b. The dense jungle/forest instills
a sense of chaos that

He offers the younger his staff to help speed his pace (Hawthorne, 264). He even shares a jolly
banter with Goody Cloyse, an elderly woman whom young Goodman Brown recognizes, and
likewise, offers his staff to aid her (Hawthorne, 266). Old Goodman Brown also gives an articulate
counter for every argument young Goodman Brown has to cut their walk short and return home. For
example, when young Goodman Brown boasts the honesty and goodness of his father and
grandfather, the traveler responds that "I have been well acquainted with your family... They were
my good friends" (Hawthorne, 264). The fact that young Goodman Brown had never heard of such a
communion spoken of in his family is almost convincing to him of its plausibility. Connell also
masks General Zaroff's evil nature with an air of friendliness and respectability. From the moment
that Rainsford appears at the front door, the general is welcoming and kind. He gives Rainsford
food, shelter, and offers his own clothes for Rainsford to wear (Connell, 4). During the course of
their conversation, General Zaroff explains to Rainsford that they are kindred spirits as fellow
hunters. Having dominated every prey he has ever stalked, Zaroff has become bored with traditional
hunting and extols the merit of a new game that he has devised, "it supplies me with the most
exciting hunting in the world. No other hunting compares with it for an instant" (Connell, 6). The
general is sure that, as a

Compare and Contrast Essay
Compare and Contrast Essay By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for
another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a
natural feeling towards a person? Some say you'll know the meaning of love when you fall in love,
yet some don't believe in love at all.
The sculpture "LOVE" created by Robert Indiana and the sculpture "The Kiss" made by Auguste
Rodin both share some of the same meanings behind the art work (Indianapolis Museum of Art)
(Rodin's The Kiss Sculpture). A major similarity between the two is love; which attracts and speaks
to people all around the world. Although they are spoken in different ways, they both have the idea
of making love. Whether it be

happiness and joy and you have the urge to feel love just by seeing it so large and up front. "LOVE"
has always been placed out in the open demanding attention from a lot of people to see. "The Kiss"
is more of a classic form of art and has been placed in more private areas. Although it has a
distressing grey color "The Kiss" has more depth; the feeling of intimacy is strong and makes a
statement.
There are both similarities and differences in "The Kiss" and "LOVE". The emotion and meaning
behind both are incredible, it shows and understands the meanings of love, lust, joy, and intimacy.
Love can either be spelt out or expressed by action and is what both pieces show. Love can be
interrupted in many ways, but there always has to be a kiss in love.

The Giver is both best–selling book by Lois Lowery and a major motion picture. They are both
centered on the same storyline and character but also have some major differences. "The movie (and
the book) takes place in the confines of "the community," something that started after "the ruin,"
when all memories were erased and everyone became equal." (Krule, 2014). The book and the
movie and the book are very different in many ways such as the plot, characters and concepts. The
book and movie are more different than they are similar, although there are a few similarities.
The plot of the book and movie follows a similar story line although there are many minor
differences. In both the book and movie the protagonist, Jonas
, is about to go through some major
changes. The Elders of the community are selecting job positions for his class. At the selection
ceremony the elders announce each kid's job positon individually. The elders skip Jonas and move
on to the next child. This part of the story is very similar in the book and the movie, Jonas is
selected to be "The Receiver of Memories", his job is to receive all the memories of the past and
gain wisdom to help the elders of the community. Some other main plot points that stay the same are
Jonas' training. The Giver transmits memories of things such as color and war and emotions, things
that no longer exist in the community. The final major event is very different between the book and
the movie. In the book, after learning about much of the past, Jonas' decides that he needs to leave
the community to "Elsewhere" to release the memories back to the community. In the movie,
however, Jonas decided to leave the community on a spur of the moment decision with little
planning or thought. This is very different from the book where Jonas' escape was carefully planned
out. One thing that is the same about Jonas' escape is that he takes Gabriel, a baby that is about to be
released (Euthanized). The ending of both the book and movie are the same, Jonas leaves the
community and finds a house in "Elsewhere". Neither works give much closure as to what happens,
the movie and book leave the reader to decide how the story ends.
The characters of The Giver are very similar but also

"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your
former self" Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and the Sea By: Ernest Hemingway and Between the
World and Me By: Ta–Nehisi Coates are very similar in many different ways. The comparison of
each book is shown well in the setting, theme, and in Symbolism. In the setting, both books provide
that the main character is a "little fish in a big sea". What that means is that the setting is very large.
The character is only a small part of the area but is trying to make a difference. In Hemingway's

really defines how he takes on fighting the marlin. One other thing that shows his suffering is the
loss of the marlin to the sharks when Santiago was on his way back to Havana after catching the
marlin. Coates way of showing suffering is in how everybody around him would have the ruthless,
hatred of African Americans. How all these people would do anything to annihilate them at all costs.
Coates really shows how he feels all of the whites treat him. One thing that coates shows is how
Prince Jones was shot and killed to death. This really affected Coates and really changed his as a
person and as a man after Jones' death. Both the books show how suffering can really change a
character for the better or for the worse. Symbolism is shown for each novel in The Marlin in The
Old Man and the Sea and Race in Between the World and Me. The symbols are something that
someone reallys want to get. They have working for something of this value for their whole lives.
The Marlin is this magnificent creature that every fisherman only dreams of catching. Once
Santiago finally catches this fish, he almost thinks of the fish as a brother. He was with the fish 2

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY
Comparison and Contrast Essay
Definition: In this kind of essay, the aim is to show the similarities and differences of two items, two
people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we
focus more on the similarities though we may mention the differences shortly. When contrasting two
things, we point out the differences between them. The most important point to consider while
planning a comparison and contrast essay is choosing comparable items. e.g. Middle East Technical

The act of being habitually and carefully neat and clean can make for an interesting topic in a
comparison and contrast essay. Dave Barry compares the differences of how women and men clean
in his compare and contrast essay, Batting Clean– Up and Striking out. In Suzanne Britt's compare
and contrast essay, Neat People vs. Sloppy People she compares the differences of personalities
between Sloppy people and neat people. Both essays compare cleanliness in one way or another
however they both have differences regarding their use of humor, examples, and points made in
their thesis.

The way Barry and Britt support their points in their compare and contrast essays differ. In Batting
Clean–Up and Striking Out, Barry uses lots of personal stories and factual happenings to explain his
opinions. For example, to explain how men are worse at cleaning Barry specifically refers to a
volcano eruption that happened in Pompei because the men, who were in control of the cleaning, did
not notice ashes piling up around and in their houses. In addition, when describing how men are
better with sports than woman he refers to a personal story; specifically a story about a dinner party
that he attended where the men were glued to the World Series and the women were still chatting
amongst themselves. These forms of examples are personal stories that offer validity. On the other
hand, in Britt's Neat people vs. Sloppy people she uses more dreamt up incidences to explain her
opinions. For example when explaining how neat people are "viscous with their mail" she explains,
" All ads, catalogs, pleas for charitable contributions, church bulletins, and money–saving coupons
go straight into the trash can without being opened...No sentimental salvaging of birthday cards or
the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Into the trash it goes" (256). As seen in this example, Britt
uses lots of lists and possible incidents that could exist to support her points, but do these incidences

Compare and Contrast
The Compare/ Contrast Essay
First, let's explain compare and contrast:
When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities.
When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences.
Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you
gather and organize information.
This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of
facts, that helps you learn as you go.
You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will
discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there.
It's like buying a new shirt. The moment you spread it out on

And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can
make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use
several points at a time.
Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your
thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and
other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout.
Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should
offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both
to make a valid statement.
Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs)
Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs:
(Lest you wish to sound pedantic, tiptoe with caution through words such as "indeed," and "of

My Parents Compare And Contrast Essay
A few of the characters find out that they are alike their parents by many ways. Me and my mom
share a connection just like that. We look alike, we act the same and everyone seems to know this.
At times it is a great connection, others it is not good at all. It plays a big role in our relationship. A
big effect it makes is in arguments. My mom tells me and my sisters about how she acted when she
was younger. She tells me about how responsible she was, when she was younger. The one thing
that she never tells us is that she is sensitive, and very dramatic. I know that I am dramatic, because
one year for valentine's day I got a heart of candy saying drama queen. My older sister points out
that when me and my mom stub our toes we both fall to the ground and say "owwwwwww" and as
my sisters says we make it way bigger deal than we should have. Another reason is that we cry at
any item that is sad like movies, books, stories. Even when a part is somewhat sad we cry. We are
dramatic and sensitive but it can be good ,because then she can understand when I am upset or sad.
It also works the other way around.

Just like my mom we can be very sassy or have a hot temper. Cassie gets mad when people treat her
worse than the whites. The same goes for my family
. When people treat me disrespectfully, I get
mad and I want to tell them otherwise, but I have learned to keep my temper and be nice to them.
Uncle Hammer reminds me of my dad. My dad has the hot temper in our family. That is where I get
my temper. All of my family members get angry when people accuse us of doing what we did not
do. My dad, my mom, and I can either get along very well or we can be mad at each

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories
Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories––
Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift
and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both
similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their
inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these
stories are alike and distinct.
In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the

In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have
such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy
was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into
the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and
suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be
trusted by Billy.
In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different
perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of
narrator
, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far
less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good
example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's
shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of
writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story,
readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another
interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other
character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because

Each university is different in it is own way, because in each building there are different nations,
faculties, and majors as well as the atmosphere of the university. However, sometimes there are
some common features between two universities and that build a similarity between the two. In the
education city at Qatar
, there are more than six different universities; each university is majoring in
a specific major. For example, Texas A&M University at Qatar is offering a degree in engineering
and Northwestern University at Qatar is offering a degree in communication and journalism. There
are similar features between both of the universities, and at the same time, each university is
different in a way.

So simply, one university is majoring in a science field, and the other one is more practical. The
difference causes differences in the method of studying in these universities. Each university
required a specific method of studying, for instance, studying engineering required understanding
math and physics concepts and the ability to solve equations. However, studying communication
and journalism required an understanding of the historical and political topics and the ability to read
and write fast. As a result, a different type of work needs to be done for each university because they
are different. As an illustration, at Northwestern University, the students need to write many
reflections and research and read the newspapers to see what is happening the world to major in this
field. However, at Texas A&M, the students need to study calculus and mechanics and understand
the process of how the object is working to be an engineer. In other words, TAMUQ required
understanding and hard studying and NUQ required practicing and
