Two of the many common instructional practices for English learners are differentiated and sheltered instructions . Differentiated instructions . In this method, the teacher modify the lessons based on the learners needs, skills and recognizing the student’s strengths. By differentiating learning materials, the students worked on the level of instructions that they felt more comfortable with, student’s learning is accelerated if their self esteem is boast, they will feel more confident and they will participate more in the class. An example of how the teacher can implement differentiation is by using different methods to ensure that learners access the learning material based on his own capacity. This is one of the most effective methods of teaching students with diverse abilities inside the classroom. For example: In a music class, give the newcomer student a chance to participate in choir by giving or arranging a simple easy part (example teacher will have him/her sing ohhs, ahhs or easy do some harmony parts in order to participate in class ) The sheltered instructions is tailored to the student’s language level, knowledge and understanding, The instructor uses clear, short, simple, modified English and a wide range of scaffolding strategies to communicate meaningful input in the content area to students. It offers student the grade-level content instruction of their English-speaking peers, while adapting lesson delivery to suit their English proficiency level. As stated on the video it is language out and not language in, meaning, student can negotiate the language to learn the content. It encourages the students to response in their 1 st language and use peers to help if needed. Example: allowing a band music student who is a newcomer to learn his part based on the (language) instructions he learned previously ex;, using sofa syllables (doremi..) instead of musical alphabets (C,D,E..), pairing him with another student who is also a bilingual to learn the other musical elements. This way he can play music with the rest of the band based on the how he understands the musical terms in his language while learning English. If the instructors focus on the prize, goals, and objectives, a good result is expected since both of these instructions are effective, and authentic for the learning experiences of the students. This topic link to the College’s Conceptual Framework for it engages students in a positive, student-focused classroom environment, implementing inclusive instruction to students in our diverse school settings.

Format your references according to APA guidelines. Submit your assignment. Resources Wk 1 Analyze the following educational programs for English learners: Structured English Immersion (ESL, ELD) Sheltered Instruction or SDAIE Newcomer Program Dual Language Program   Complete the Educational Programs Models for English Learners .   Educational Program Models for English Learners Part 1 Complete the Educational Program Models for English Learners Chart. Describe each program type: o Structured English Immersion (ESL, ELD) o Sheltered Instruction or SDAIE
o Newcomer Program o Dual Language Program Review the six bulleted “Quality Research Indicators” listed on pg. 36 in Ch. 1 of Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL . Describe how each program does or does not meet these indicators. Consider the federal and state requirements for the program implementation (e.g. NCLB, Title III; IDEA; Proposition 227; Williams v. State of California; Lau v. Nichols). Describe the historical and legal foundations of each program. Examine and describe parent notification rights within these programs. Program Type Description “Quality Research Indicators” Meet vs. Not Meet and Justification Historical and Legal Foundation Description Parent Notification Dual Language Program This program fully meets the requirements set out by all four quality indicators. It provides “comprehensive English language instruction,” “academic content-area instruction,” “opportunities for primary language development,” and “professional development opportunities” for teachers (Peregoy, 2017, pgs 29- 30). Coral Way Elementary , a K-8 school in Dade County, Florida, is cited as the first two-way bilingual school, beginning in 1963. The program was started by Cuban citizens who were seeking refuge in Florida from the Castro regime and believed that their children would eventually return to Cuban schools. There are no specific criteria for students except parental choice.
