Literacy in my Discipline Literacy is important to me for many reasons. It is a key factor in my education for many years. The ability to be literate is important in teaching my discipline because I am responsible to
teach my students the importance of literacy. In the discipline of English, literacy is the heart of the discipline. English is learning how to properly read, write and comprehend different texts. Literacy is defined as the ability to read, write and speak effectively. As teachers of English if we did not make literacy a key focus in our everyday learning our students would not be learning. Whereas in other varying disciplines literacy is used to support the ideas of what a student is learning. As well as help further a student’s ability to comprehend what is being taught. Depending on the type of English course you teach text can play a few different roles. It can be the fiction and or non-fiction piece your class is reading. It could be an interview with an author or a movie/video of the text. Lastly, it could be an audiobook for those students who find it easier to listen to and comprehend versus reading. Text is one of the biggest pieces of our discipline most English courses study text and then write many different essays/pieces. English comes with its fair share of specialized languages. It is an advantage to those who
teach this discourse because we can connect on a deeper level and better explain the pieces and points of view of each author. English is about finding the deeper meaning of a piece whether it be the author's greater purpose or sharing their point of view on a topic. In the discourse use special terms to explain these topics which allow us to all connect to the piece. The disadvantages of specialized language can vary. Most of the time I find myself as the
only English major/professional in courses that are not English based. This makes things hard because when I read a piece and or try to explain the meaning, I automatically used the specialized language. This leads to further explanation, or my peers and colleagues being confused. Also, it sometimes leads to loneliness from others not being able to relate or correspond due to the lack of extensive English knowledge.
