Le 1 Tran Le Professor Sullivan ENG 1A May 28, 2024 Composition #3 Annotated Bibliography The problem: Immigrants in learning in the education system and adapting to school life Research sources: Source 1 (Mission College database): Barriers and facilitators associated with the use of mental health services among immigrant students in high-income countries: A systematic scoping review Citation: Dombou, C., Omonaiye, O., Fraser, S., Cénat, J. M., Fournier, K., & Yaya, S. (2023). “Barriers and facilitators associated with the use of mental health services among immigrant students in high-income countries: A systematic scoping review”. PloS One, 18(6), e0287162–e0287162. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0287162 Paragraph #1 - Summarize the Source: This source directly addresses the problem of immigrant students' mental health in high-income countries, a topic of increasing concern as the number of immigrant students rises. It provides a comprehensive review of the barriers and facilitators associated with using mental health services among these students. The article draws on a wide range of student experiences such as mental health, and financial situation, and other things in their lives, highlighting the diverse contexts in which these challenges arise. Paragraph #2 - Evaluate the source:
Le 2 This peer-reviewed article was published in 2023, so the information is relatively recent compared to the present. It also follows the PRISMA-ScR checklist as a guide and the Web of Science data. Therefore, it is a good source of material for my essay. Paragraph #3 - Establish the relevance/applicability: This article is significant because it addresses many issues immigrant students face when moving to high-income countries. As an immigrant student, I also partly understand those concerns. In particular, this peer-reviewed article focuses on how the challenges faced by immigrant students significantly affect their mental health. Source 2 (Mission College database): "Just Like Me": How Immigrant Students Experience a U.S. High School Citation: McCloud, J. (2015). “Just Like Me”: How Immigrant Students Experience a U.S. High School”. The High School Journal, 98(3), 262–282. https://doi.org/10.1353/hsj.2015.0008 Paragraph #1 - Summarize the Source: This study delves into the experiences of immigrant students in U.S. high schools, particularly those enrolled in advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The research, based on data from students from Mexico, Honduras, and China, explores how these students navigate the school environment to learn English. It also sheds light on the complexities of ESL II classes and the unique challenges these students face. Paragraph #2 - Evaluate the source: This is a peer-reviewed article by Jennifer, published in 2015, using material from The High School and published by The University of North Carolina. This may be helpful for my essay as it has a lot of current data.
Le 3 Paragraph #3 - Establish the relevance/applicability: This article illuminates how immigrant students select and use learning strategies in ESL classes and provides a platform for shared experiences. I chose this material because it mirrors my struggles when I first took ESL classes at community college such as needing to change my accent, and how to pronounce a lot of words. Moreover, this material encompasses students from various countries, making it a valuable resource for the immigrant student community. Source 3 (Mission College database): Strategic Transformation: Cultural and Gender Identity Negotiation in First-Generation Vietnamese Youth Citation: Stritikus, T., & Nguyen, D. (2007). “Strategic Transformation: Cultural and Gender Identity Negotiation in First-Generation Vietnamese Youth”. American Educational Research Journal, 44(4), 853–895. https://doi.org/10.3102/0002831207308645 Paragraph #1 - Summarize the Source: This article explores how recent Vietnamese immigrant students assert their cultural identity as they move to study and live in the United States. It traces how Vietnamese students must change their lives and studies to integrate into the United States. It is truly a journey full of stress that they have to face. Besides, it also addresses the issue of gender, which plays an essential part in changing the thinking of immigrant youth quite a lot. Paragraph #2 - Evaluate the source: This is a peer-reviewed article by Tom Stritikus and Diem Nguyen, using information from the American Educational Research Journal. It also collected extensive data from Vietnamese

Le 4 immigrant students over two years and their experiences adjusting to new life in the United States. Paragraph #3 - Establish the relevance/applicability: This article talks about the experiences of Vietnamese immigrant students when they moved to settle and study in the United States. I use this document because it allows me to see that I have had and am having similar experiences when I am also a Vietnamese student settling in the United States. In addition, it also helps me have more materials for my research. Source 4 (Mission College database): Family Pressure and the Educational Experience of the Daughters of Vietnamese Refugees Citation: Zhou, M., & Bankston III, C. L. (2001). “Family Pressure and the Educational Experience of the Daughters of Vietnamese Refugees”. International Migration, 39(4), 133–151. https://doi.org/10.1111/1468-2435.00165 Paragraph #1 - Summarize the Source: This article is based on ethnographic research on Versailles Village, a low-income ethnic community in New Orleans, USA, exploring the issues facing young Vietnamese Americans, especially women. This article shows how Vietnamese high school girls navigate between their parents' traditionalism and their desire for personal freedom. Besides, it also highlights how young Vietnamese women raised in America affirm their position at home, school, and in society. They have proven equal and even superior in academic achievement and ambition. Young women today are freeing themselves from traditional gender roles and taking advantage of the conditions that favor their new life in America. On the other hand, it highlights families' tremendous pressure on women to succeed in all areas of their lives.
Le 5 Paragraph #2 - Evaluate the source: This is a peer-reviewed article by Min Zhou and Carl L. Bankston, part of International. It was presented as a paper at a workshop on East Asian Immigrant Women—The Other Half of the "Model Minority"? on March 14 and 15, 1998, at Vassar College, New York. Paragraph #3 - Establish the relevance/applicability: As the oldest daughter in the family, I also partly understand the mood of young women today. They have had to endure a lot of pressure from their families to assert themselves at home, school, and in life. My parents put a lot of hope in me that I could graduate from college in America. I had to try very hard in my studies and work to confirm that even though I am a girl, I can also do many things like other boys. I was pressured but also somewhat understood my parents' situation as they were in a family with a tradition of favoring men over women, and they did not have a son. That also motivated me to try harder when I moved here. (2007). “Australian Vietnamese Students Learning Mathematics: High Ability Bilinguals and Their Use of Their Languages”. Educational Studies in Mathematics, 64(2), 191–215. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10649-006-4696-5 Paragraph #1 - Summarize the Source: This article was launched to confirm a previous study that bilingual students are disadvantaged in learning mathematics at school. This study explored the success of Vietnamese students in
Le 6 Australia using bilingualism while learning mathematics. At the same time, it also points out many reasons and aspects when bilingual students switch languages to study at school. Paragraph #2 - Evaluate the source: This article is a peer-reviewed article written by Philip C. Clarkson and is part of the journal Educational Studies in Mathematics Vol. 64, No. 2, Multilingual Issues in Mathematics Education in February 2007. It was published at the Australian Catholic University Faculty of Education. Paragraph #3 - Establish the relevance/applicability: As a bilingual student with a lot of experience using language to study at a community college, I also partly understand students' difficulties. Instead of feeling difficult because I encountered a language barrier, I used it as an advantage to gradually understand the knowledge that was stuck in my learning process.
