ENG 130 Module One Reading Response Template Interviewing the Text
Choose the text you will use for your project. Then, explain why you chose that text: The text I selected for my project is “
The Era of Happy Tech Workers is Over
” by Nadia Rawlinson. I chose this article because it's very informative to me. I started in IT at 16 as a computer tech in 1998 and
can relate to the topic. It seems that one minute you’re the office hero in a Polo shirt and khakis then you're trying to sell chrome books to old ladies at Geek Squad. While I'm trying to add a little humor, it did happen. Identify the topic of the text: The article aims to put a spotlight on the state of Tech workers starting with the tech boom of the 90s that had turned a field of collegiates and small-time entrepreneurs into some of the richest and most uniquely perked workers in the world. Then afterward slowly slip into bankruptcy and layoffs. I really should say the topic is the economic decline of the Tech worker and the effect it had on the economy on
a whole. Identify the genre of the text: The genre of the text would be Informative Nonfiction “Its primary purpose is to inform the reader about
the natural or social world. Different from fiction, and other forms of nonfiction, informational text does not utilize characters.”
(Duke & Bennett-Armistead, 2003) . There are many genres it could fit into but I believe that one to be more direct. Describe the writer’s purpose: The author intends to enlighten readers about the repercussions experienced by tech workers who, once in high demand during the 1990s tech boom, faced career uncertainties as the industry waned. The
narrative delves into the harsh realities of layoffs and salary reductions, a stark contrast to the previously superior treatment these workers enjoyed compared to others globally. Determine the historical context of the text: The historical context starts in the 1990s and early 2000s during a time of overnight millionaires and high-paying tech jobs on to their decline from then to the present. The author writes of the companies that have cut their jobs. What they have been doing to mediate the problem today Determine the
cultural context of the text: [Insert text.]
I believe that the author is trying to explain how these companies and their workforce need to work together to try to avoid the loss of jobs. She uses her perspective from a human resource CEO at Live Nation Entertainment and the chief People Officer at Slack and makes a more informed experience opinion of the workers and their companies.
Identify the core idea
of the text: The core idea is to inform the reader of the ups and downs of tech workers and their companys. She also
wants to convey what is being done about on both sides of the issue. Identify
details
of the text that are relevant to the core idea: “The industry is facing an uneven macroeconomic environment and a roiling stock market that is putting
pressure on public tech companies and making for a less-than-ideal I.P.O. environment for private ones.
“— with its radically transparent company cultures, empowered employees, flat hierarchies and rarefied
perks like nap pods and free food — is quickly disappearing. And it’s unlikely to return.
