Running head: WHAT IS RESEARCH? 1 RSCH 202 – Module 1: What is Research? Kevin Thongkham Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide RSCH 202: Introduction to Research Methods Dr. Natalie Walker January 13, 2022
WHAT IS RESEARCH? 2 RSCH 202 – Module 1: What is Research? What is research in your own words? Describe the techniques and tools you used to research your topic. How does this differ from the academic research you do for a class? How does it differ from research and development conducted in various industries and businesses (aviation, product development, etc.)? How does it differ from scientific research conducted in a lab? Hello class of RSCH 202, My name is Kevin Thongkham and I am pursuing a BS in Engineering Technology. This degree will help provide the skills and knowledge I need to become a Quality Engineer. I am currently a quality technician at an Aerospace company out in Phoenix, AZ. I have moved out here since 2004, originally from San Diego, CA. Research is a critical fundamental in engineering. To me, research is investigating. I conduct root cause investigations and help with corrective actions. I ensure the overall quality of our products and processes meets standards and requirements. The most recent topic I researched was using the Google search engine to see if “borrowing from your 401(k) will affect your credit.” The reason why I chose this topic is that I recently activated my Health Savings Account this year and noticed that I had funds from my previous employer from years ago. I wanted to see if it will affect my credit and if I would get a penalty since I am younger than the retirement age.
WHAT IS RESEARCH? 3 The Google search engine is an incredible tool because it provides countless of information regarding this topic. There are many links to choose from including the pros and cons of borrowing from your 401(k). I can compare the information from different websites and decide on borrowing, cashing out, rolling over, or doing nothing until I reach the retirement age. This differs from academic research because anyone can post something on the internet and Google will find it. As opposed to our EAGLEsearch search engine, this is a research database with scholarly peer-reviewed articles, journals, books, ebooks, videos, etc. Also, the EAGLEsearch can direct us to a librarian where we can email, chat, text, call and consult with librarians to help with resources or information. I believe research and development conducted in various industries and businesses differ from researching on Google because these industries and businesses initiate the proper analysis for experiments and improvements. Their focus is entirely on designing, creating, and marketing new products or upgrading existing products. Lastly, scientific research conducted in the lab usually starts off with a theory. These theories begin with scientific methods and experiments for results that are aimed towards that theory. In contrast, research on the internet requires you to independently develop an original argument.
