Report
Semiconductor Sustainability Michael Cruz As the world turns to smart devices for some of their everyday task, semiconductors, or chips as they are sometimes referred to, power each of these smart devices. Semiconductor manufacturing requires some of the world’s most precise tools to manufacture these nanometer chips. Before each step in the manufacturing process, water is used to clean the surface of the silicon wafer (a wafer that contains a few hundred to thousands of chips). Understanding the stress this causes on the environment, Samsung Semiconductor has vowed to do its part in helping the environment. In 2021, Samsung Semiconductor became the first semiconductor factory to obtain a Platinum rating from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) on its first evaluation. During this evaluation, the AWS asks how water-consuming organizations assess the outcomes of five areas . These areas are good water governance, sustainable water balance, good water quality status, important water-related areas, and safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for all (wash) ( The AWS Standard 2.0 , 2023). Samsung’s first step is performing a risk analysis of its water supply. Second, Samsung has established action plans for water resource management. Third, they have implemented a plan to separately manage water by type and set annual savings goals. Fourth, they evaluate, improve, and update their performance to all stakeholders. The last step is being transparent to all about their water management strategy by providing annual reports. This is one step in the direction of saving the planet and giving back to the community. Samsung’s effort in helping the environment begins with addressing two separate areas , saving water and reducing air/water pollutants. Although Samsung plans on doubling their factories by 2030, they’ve also vowed to consume water at their 2021 levels. Their plan to address water consumption is to innovate new ways to treat air/water pollutants to a natural level, which is less impactful on the environment than traditional ways. Although the chip manufacturing process can cause potential harm to the environment, Samsung is at the forefront of leading the way to do its part in saving the planet.
