) One scheme to generate energy with a zero carbon footprint is through solar power. Solar power harnesses the energy from the sun and converts it into electricity. 2) The process works by using solar panels, which are made up of photovoltaic cells that absorb sunlight. When sunlight hits these cells, it creates an electric field that generates electricity. This scheme can be implemented on a large scale by installing solar farms or rooftop solar panels. Solar power is a renewable energy source that produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. 3 ) 1) In terms of practicality, solar power can definitely be implemented on a large scale to have a significant impact. The availability of sunlight makes it feasible to install solar panels in various locations, including rooftops, open fields, and even on water bodies. This widespread adoption can contribute to a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. When it comes to energy efficiency, solar panels have a positive energy return on investment. Studies have shown that the energy produced by solar panels over their lifetime is several times greater than the energy required for their manufacturing and installation. On average, it takes about 1-4 years for a solar cell to generate the same amount of energy that was used in its production. 3) While solar energy is abundant during the day, storing excess energy for use when the sun isn't shining is crucial. There are practical technologies available for energy storage. Battery storage systems, such as lithium-ion batteries, are commonly used to store surplus energy generated during sunny periods. These batteries can then release the stored energy during cloudy days or at night. Other methods like pumped hydro storage, which involves using excess solar energy to pump water uphill and then releasing it to generate electricity when needed, and thermal energy storage, which stores heat produced by solar panels for later use, are also practical options.
