Week 1 The first week of lab work began with a reintroduction to the Toolwire desktop functions, the District of Columbia Open Data website, and ArcGIS. Gathering the tools necessary to generate this intelligence product began with the Washington D.C. open data website. The website provided the baseline tools necessary; shapefiles of streets, hospitals, police and fire stations, and the city boundaries. Acquiring this vector data and loading it into ArcGIS is required before analysis of the National Special Security Event (NSSE) can occur. Once the shapefiles were loaded into ArcMap, an organized vector map of the DC area with streets and first responder locations is displayed.
Week 2 The second week of lab work focused on the visualization and organization of the ArcMap. Each layer allows several manipulation features such as changing the color, shape, and size of icons and labels. Organizing these layers by shape and color allows the developer to generate a legend for the map. Because ArcMap provides a zoom function, a scale range for labeling is necessary to set zoom parameters. Without this feature, zooming in to a certain level would make the map impossible to read. The ability to adjust all these layers and properties is necessary to generate organized, readable maps and products.

Week 3 The third week of lab work demonstrated the procedures for minimizing data downloads, file sizes, and map coverage. The Washington D.C. open data website offers "building footprint" data sets that contain vectors outlines of buildings for the entire city. The open data website allows users to either download the entire region or customize the area for desired download. Smaller file sizes are always ideal for data storage, data transmission, and Toolwire.
