Row Heading 1 Professor Plummer BCIS-1305-62601 Spring 2024 12/19/2023 Case Study 1 1. Research the programs and apps that Lauren might use in her degree program and recommend a computer with sufficient hardware specifications to adequately support her through the degree program. According to research, I think she may utilize a Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint, as these are common computer applications that everyone must have. She will use PowerPoint for her presentations because she will have projects to present during her studies, Word to write reports on observations, and Excel to gather and write her data. I suggest a Microsoft laptop considering these laptops already come with the software she will most likely need, so she won't have to buy them separately. If she got a Mac, she'd have to pay for them or make an additional download and sign up for a Microsoft account. I recommend a portable laptop given that she is a college student she will be able to take it with her wherever she goes and use it for various things. 2. Provide links (sources) to the computer you locate and justify why you feel the computer will best meet her needs. The 12.4" Microsoft Surface Laptop is just what Lauren needs. It has Microsoft 365, which includes all of the Microsoft Office apps she can need for free. This also provides her with 15GB of email storage as well as Calendar integrations.
Row Heading 2 Furthermore, biology majors take a lot of notes, which she can type on this computer or directly write with the touchscreen function. It has a 256GB SSD, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i5 processor. It is simple to charge and has a battery life of up to 18 hours. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsoft-surface-laptop-go-3-12-4-touch-screen- intel-core-i5-with-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-latest-model-sandstone/ 3. Why did you choose the amount of RAM? I chose this laptop for her because it will meet all of her needs. Lauren will not require more than 16GB of RAM even though she will be collecting a lot of data. I chose 16 GB above 8GB since 8GB would be sufficient for a casual computer user but considering that she will be using it for everyday productivity, she will also be performing a lot of processing, and she will use it for her entire college years. Lauren will be able to run many applications and apps at the same time, which will be plenty for the majority of the work she will need to perform. 4. Why did you choose the storage device? I chose a 256GB SSD for storage, which should be enough for Lauren. She will have ample storage for her school files as she will not be working with massive multimedia files. The SSD will keep her data in flash memory, which is significantly faster than the old hard disks they've replaced. If she obtains 128GB, she risks running out of capacity, and 512GB is too much for her and unnecessary; the extra storage serves no purpose.
Row Heading 3 Since Lauren will be attending college, she has decided she needs to work part time to pay for her computer. Her new position will be an advisor who works in an open office with co-works nearby her school. She advises clients both in person and over the telephone, as well as by using video conferencing. 1. What types of input and output devices might Lauren require on her computer to do her job? Lauren's new profession may require her computer to include input and output devices such as a keyboard, a mouse, a webcam, a microphone, and a printer. Another possibility may be to utilize a monitor to present her clients information when they meet or to screenshare during videocalls. 2. Which input and output devices do you feel are necessary, and which ones do you feel would be nice to have? For Lauren's position, I believe a keyboard, mouse, webcam, and microphone are all necessary. While a printer and a monitor would be useful, they may not be necessary. If she needs a printer, she can use one at the office or the school library, and while an extra monitor may help her organize the various tabs she has, it is not necessary because she can do everything from her laptop.

Row Heading 4 3. Given the sensitive nature of the information Lauren might be displaying and using, are there any other hard-ware components you might recommend making sure Lauren’s clients’ information is protected? Lauren must take extra precautions to protect her client's information. To accomplish this, she should utilize a laptop privacy screen, strong passwords, strong authentication, and antivirus software. When she works in a public setting, the privacy screen will keep others from seeing what she is doing or what information she has displayed. Having strong passwords and strong authentication helps protect her computer from being hacked and makes it difficult for anyone to access her belongings if they get a hold of them. To prevent malware from inflicting damage to her device, she should use antivirus software that detects and deletes malicious code. In her last year of college, Lauren must complete a one (1) semester intern to gain college credit in biology to graduate. She will work in the veterinarian’s office. When Lauren arrives to work one afternoon the receptionist informs her that the computer monitor is not displaying anything. 1. List at least three (3) steps you will perform to troubleshoot the problem. Explain in detail. Verify that all cables, ports, and adapters are properly attached. Additionally, ensure that the video and power wires are securely secured at both ends.
Row Heading 5 Reset the BIOS by powering on the system and pressing the BIOS key. Then, look for Restore Defaults, Reset, Load Optimized Defaults, or a similar option. Turn off the computer and unplug any peripherals. A disagreement between peripheral devices might occasionally result in a black screen or no display. 2. List three (3) possible causes. Explain in detail. The first possibility is that the cables are broken or loosely attached. Incorrect display configuration, a malfunctioning or problematic GPU or RAM may also be possible causes. There could be a faulty peripheral device or an incorrect BIOS configuration.
