1 Joy R. Magee MSCIN Program, Western Governors University D185: Designing the Curriculum and Instruction II Task 3: Leveraging Digital Tools to Design Authentic Learning July 26, 2023
2 Lesson Plan Lesson Plan: Digital Math Wizards Content Area: Math Grade Level: Kindergarten State Standard (Louisiana): K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality (Louisiana Department of Education, 2017). K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter (Louisiana Department of Education, 2017). Essential Question: How can we use digital tools to explore numbers, quantities, and comparisons interactively? Learning Activity: Digital Math Wizards Objective: Students will count, sort, and compare objects using a digital math activity. Materials: Digital devices with internet access for each student or shared in pairs. Procedure: 1. Introduction (10 minutes) Introduce counting, sorting, and comparisons in math with a short interactive video. 2. Digital Math Wizards (20 minutes) Introduce a digital math tool that focuses on counting, sorting, and comparing objects. Demonstrate the tool's features and how to use it. Students explore the tool independently or in pairs, practicing counting, sorting, and comparing quantities. 3. Group Discussion (10 minutes) Facilitate a group discussion about their experience with the digital math activity. 4. Assessment (10 minutes) Assess students' understanding with a worksheet or observation during their interaction with the tool. Conclusion: Review counting, sorting, and comparisons, emphasizing the importance of numbers in our daily lives. Encourage students to explore more digital math tools for learning.
3 Extension Activity (Optional): Challenge students to create their own digital math wizard adventure to share with classmates. The digital math tool, "Digital Math Wizards," helps students answer the essential question by providing interactive learning, reinforcing counting and sorting skills, facilitating easy comparisons, offering immediate feedback, and catering to different learning styles. It engages students in fun and hands-on activities related to numbers, quantities, and comparisons, fostering active and deep learning in math. The digital tool, "Digital Math Wizards," facilitates active, deep learning by engaging students in critical thinking and self-directed exploration. Through the tool's various math activities, students are presented with objects to count, sort, and compare, prompting them to analyze the attributes of these objects and make decisions based on their characteristics. For instance, when sorting objects into different categories, students must think critically about which attributes to focus on, such as shapes or colors, fostering effective categorization and honing their critical thinking skills. Furthermore, during the group discussion, students have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences with the tool, sharing their counting, sorting, and comparing strategies, and discussing any challenges encountered. Engaging in this dialogue not only fosters critical thinking as they evaluate their learning process but also helps them make connections between mathematical concepts. Moreover, the digital tool empowers students to explore math activities independently or in pairs, offering them the freedom to choose which objects to count, how to sort them, and which quantities to compare. This autonomy encourages students to take ownership of their learning journey and direct their exploration of math concepts, fostering self-directed learning. Additionally, the extension activity encourages students to create their own digital math wizard adventure, allowing them to design activities, determine content, and set rules. Engaging in this

4 creative process not only reinforces math concepts but also nurtures their ability to take initiative in their learning. By incorporating critical thinking tasks and providing opportunities for self-directed learning, the "Digital Math Wizards" tool effectively maximizes active, deep learning. Students develop problem-solving skills, enhance their critical thinking abilities, and cultivate their capacity for independent exploration and learning.
