Assignment 1: Fingerprint Markers Zachary Cooper Biometrics: ISSC325 Doctor Harry Cooper June 11, 2023
2 Assignment 1 The above photo is of a random fingerprint from an unknown individual. Initial look at the fingerprint without using an inquisitive eye makes the print appear rather uniform. According to the video on AFIS, the analysts for the fingerprint matching do a ten-point inspection. This assumes that ten points of similarities are looked for. Some of the above fingerprint is blurred but there are definite unique qualities to this print. The justification will be from top to bottom. The most top circle has what appears to be a ridge ending and being overtaken by the two parallel ridges. The next circle has a ridge split suddenly, creating a gap in it and elliptical shape in the print. The third circle down has the ridge split again but does not reconnect like the former example. Instead, this third circle has the ridge fork, becoming two ridges from one. The center circle shows what most prints have, some sort of swirl. Just because most prints have this swirl does not mean it should be glossed over. The swirl on this print looks like a goose and has a sort of beak and even an eye at a quick glance. The next
3 Assignment 1 circle is the large one on the left and has the ridge split and then rejoin again. To the right, and the last circle, does the same reconnecting and splitting but this one is tighter. This is not ten but for a small and blurred fingerprint, this shows at least six unique aspects that can be compared against other fingerprints. Experts can most likely find the most minute details to use when comparing prints.
