Griffin 1 The research methodology utilized to investigate the relationship between happiness and money leverages a qualitative interview-based approach. Multiple diverse informants participated in interviews held via the Zoom online platform. Zoom was employed to record and transcribe each interview to allow for subsequent in-depth analysis. The auto-generating transcription feature of Zoom enabled both the transcriptions and recordings to be organized directly into a text document from the interview. After the interviews, the transcriptions and the recordings were meticulously evaluated to ensure their accuracy and alignment between spoken words and transcribed text, enhancing validity. Three informants were selected to be interviewed to further research the relationship between money and happiness. All three were chosen to offer a diverse and accurate representation of our society based on characteristics like age, socioeconomic status, religion, and ethnicity. Each interviewee was questioned individually via the Zoom online platform with the camera on to show facial expressions better and better understand their feelings and responses to the questions. This was also done to record and transcribe each interview for future use and analysis. Each interview occurred when the interviewee was in their home, so they were in the most comfortable environment to answer the questions. First, Sofia Marquina, a Hispanic 21-year-old UF pre-medical student majoring in Microbiology, was interviewed on Zoom at 8:02 pm on Saturday, February 17 th, 2024. On the same day at 8:55 pm, Brycen Vanwitzenburg, an American 13-year-old avid middle school athlete, was interviewed via Zoom. Then, Wayne Davis, an American, late middle-aged building contractor, was interviewed via Zoom on Wednesday, February 21 st, 2024. The selection of informants with diverse backgrounds aimed to reflect the various perspectives on happiness and money validly. The informants that were interviewed were chosen to differ in as many characteristics as possible. My first interviewee, Sofia, my girlfriend of one year, was selected because I am interested in her perspectives on the interplay between money and happiness given, she comes from contrasting cultural and economic backgrounds compared to mine. She is 21 years old like me, so her perspective is expected to resonate with that of other college students. A short backstory is she, about six months ago, got into an extremally severe, life-threatening motorcycle accident. Her extensive injuries and subsequent financial strain from the vast amount of medical bills may have significantly impacted how she views happiness and money, providing a unique but valuable perspective through which to investigate the impact of financial challenges on happiness. One of the main reasons she is a perfect candidate for this is because she is an extremally content person no matter how hard her life gets at times; she has always found the positives in things to stay happy even when things like her crash happen. Additionally, it is fitting to have at least one female informant for greater gender diversity, allowing for a more comprehensive investigation of the topic from the perspectives of both sexes. Brycen my stepbrother who came into my life after his father passed when he was 2. Perhaps losing a loved one early in life changes one’s viewpoint on the value of money compared to other things in life like family. Given he is in 8th grade and 13 years old the things that make him happy are probably far different compared to other older people. The way that a 13-year-old values money also may be entirely different than adults who need money to pay for
Griffin 2 things, given Brycen has no income or bills to pay. Given Brycen is an avid athlete and very smart in thinking about his future; this may change how money makes him feel about money and happiness. Wayne is my oldest informant. I interviewed at 60 years old. It will be valuable and interesting to see how age plays a role in a person’s perspective on money and happiness given they have more life experiences and knowledge. I met Wayne through my father as Wayne is a builder that my dad paints for. Given that Wayne is a building contractor and doing well in his industry, I would say that he represents people with a fair and reasonable amount of wealth behind them. One crucial memory relevant to this research about Wayne was when I helped him by cleaning up a property of his, and he paid me better then I deserved. His charitable view on money and how he gave me extra might say that he has a generous perspective on money, and this could provide a unique perspective for this research. The Respondents were asked six questions plus follow-up questions, as seen below. 1. I’d like to know how you define happiness. Not what makes you happy but happiness itself. 2. How is wealth or money related to a person’s long-term happiness? 3. How much do you think someone has to earn in order to be considered wealthy? Why that number? 4. Imagine you won a lottery with a $100 million payout. What things would you do first? How would your life change? Your relationships? 5. What benefits related to happiness does wealth provide a person? 6. Would you like to add anything else? So, these questions were asked the same for each respondent, plus any follow-up questions that I deemed useful in order to get a better understanding of their perspectives. Before the questions were asked, I read the same paragraph to each person so that they wouldn’t worry and knew they couldn’t be wrong. The paragraph is noted below. Thank you for talking to me today. I am doing a class project about happiness.  I choose you as someone I would like to interview for your thoughts on that topic.  Your answers cannot be right or wrong, they reflect your own thoughts and feelings.  I am hoping to learn about happiness from your perspective.
