Victor Adams WST-038 Chapter 1 Review Questions Explain the difference between discrete and continuous data sets in your own words. Give three examples of each. Discrete data represents objects that exist in the real world. Primarily geographic data that only occurs in specific locations. Examples of discrete data include tree locations, rivers and streets. Continuous data is generally represented by a scale and can be measured anywhere on earth. Examples of Continuous Data include temperature, rainfall and elevation. A 50-m long swimming pool measures 2-cm on a large-scale map. What is the scale of the map? 0.02m/50m = 1/x 2500 = x The scale is: 1:2,500 Explain why GIS data sets are considered to have a source scale but not a map scale. GIS data sets don’t have map scales because only coordinates are stored. The data has a source scale that illustrates the scale at which the data was taken from before it was converted digitally. In what ways have the sources from which GIS data are obtained changed? Originally, GIS data was stored on hard drives running GIS software, downloaded on to CD’s and DVD’s. from data clearinghouses or shared drives used to store GIS data. The emergence of the internet made it possible so that GIS data is now downloaded from government and private sources, via giant datasets. Jamie is hiking trails in a forest and using his smartphone to track his position. In this remote location with heavy tree cover, his phone typically records his position within 25 to 50 meters. Discuss the accuracy and precision of the trail map he creates. The trail that Jamie is hiking would be precise, being that the trail map is basically the same and follows the same pattern as Jamie did. However, because Jamie’s phone is recording his position 25 to 50 meters away, the trail may not be 100% accurate. There is a chance that as the map is created, Jamie is not in the actual location that he is recording his positions in. Judy creates a smartphone app that allows bird-watchers to upload the location and species of birds that they spot. Discuss the potential data quality issues that might affect her final map of bird sightings.
Of the data quality issues that may affect Judy’s final map include generalization, since the bird sightings would require symbols to represent data, also, how big would the symbols be. Data issues may also arise depending on how others upload the bird sightings, are they using GPS, or plotting points manually? There are also factors that would lead to disproportionate data, such as are the bird watchers going at set times or at their leisure. Construct an appropriate citation for the data that come with this book. Mastering ArcGIS Pro (2023) [Print] McGraw Hill, New York, NY Compare and contrast the terms window , view , and pane as they relate to the ArcGIS Pro user interface. The Window is the operation in its entirety. It includes the view and pane, as well as all other functions that can be done in ArcGIS Pro. The View is located inside of the window, next to the pane. It is the actual map. The View shows you what map you are working on. The Pane is a toolbox within the window that allows you to control what is in the view by the use of layers and tabs. Explain what geoprocessing tools and parameters are. Geoprocessing tools are software that is designed to perform specific tasks that require executing several tools in sequence. The parameters are the instructions that inform the tool how to proceed. Describe the difference between core ribbons and contextual ribbons. Core ribbons are always visible, while contextual ribbons appear and disappear as you work and select the various parts of the project.
