CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 1 on Page 1 CS 10100 Homework 05 Due Thursday, 09/28, 11:59 pm Delete nothing from this file. Edit this file to add your typewritten answers to each question. When your answer includes a diagram make sure that it is clear and large enough to read. Ensure that your answer fits on the same page as its question. If you change the pagination of this file or if your complete answer to a question does not fit on the page with that question, then you may receive a lower score. Export your completed Word file to PDF. Upload your PDF file to Gradescope.com. It is your responsibility to upload this assignment to its correct place in Gradescope. You may upload multiple times. Your final upload will be scored. Use the download capability to check your upload. Uploading will be blocked after the due time (plus grace period). Max score = 10 points; 1 point per question. The above directions apply for all assignments uploaded to Gradescope. Why should your answer be on the same page with its question? Answer: Gradescope has been programmed to expect that your PDF file will have exactly one question and your entire answer to it on one page. This allows Gradescope to automatically find and display your answers to the instructional team for scoring. HW05 Q1. List five things you use every day that have an embedded computer. Smartphone, smartwatch, earbuds, laptop, computer mouse
CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 2 on Page 2 HW05 Q2. Modern smartphones have touch screens on which keyboards can appear when needed, be removed when not needed, and can be displayed for various character sets (languages). Early smartphones such as the Blackberry had predetermined button keyboards. Is using a screen instead of physical buttons an example of late or early binding? Explain. Using a screen keyboard instead of physical buttons is an example of late binding. It is an example of late binding because the specific keyboard was not fixed during manufacturing, as it allows users to switch between different layouts and languages, and because it van be adjusted by the user itself to match their preferences, ideas, and needs.
CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 3 on Page 3 Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii_Gz1WbBGA&feature=youtu.be about controlling an airport from over 50 miles away. Answer Questions Q3 and Q4 using what you learn from the video. HW05 Q3. Identify three potential benefits of this system. Cheaper to build, easier visibility for air-traffic controllers, no weather liabilities

CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 4 on Page 4 HW05 Q4. Identify two potential risks and explain how the engineers “fixed” these risks. Two potential risks are what happens if the screens and cameras fail. If one screen fails, the system will recognize it and transmit the image onto a spare screen, and then reshuffle the images, and then the engineers can come and fix it. If a camera fails, the pan-tilt cameras on the top of the housing which replicates what the camera would see. If the cameras fail entirely, the air-traffic controllers would act as if it was heavy fog and rely on other methods of communication to the airport which are unaffected.
CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 5 on Page 5 HW05 Q5. Today the world is filled with compact computers in the form of tablets and laptops, but 20 years ago it was hard to imagine a computer that wasn't a bulky desktop. This was because computers then had to hold all four components of a computer on a circuit board. a. What technology has allowed computers to become less bulky? Integrated circuits have allowed computers to become less bulky because they are small microchips that can perform various tasks and functions, such as data storage, controlling hardware, and processing data. b. List one advantage and one disadvantage of that technology. Once advantage of integrated circuits is that they are small miniature circuits that allow for other miniature electric components, which make electronic devices smaller and lighter, as well as more portable. One disadvantaged of integrated circuits is that they can produce a lot of heat since they are so strong but still so powerful. Managing the heating can be difficult and can lead to overheating which can cause problems in the circuits.
CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 6 on Page 6 HW05 Q6. Pick any object around you that does not have any embedded processor in it (e.g., whiteboard or black markers in your classroom). Now design a set of functionalities that you can insert into the same object with the help of an embedded processor (e.g., a marker that automatically changes color with just a press of a button). I have a mousepad with me that currently does not have an embedded processor in it, as it is just a piece of felt material. With an embedded processor, the mousepad could wirelessly charge my mouse and could also change color.

CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 7 on Page 7 HW05 Q7. In class, we read how “Smart Home” improves our way of living. List two major risks that might be associated with “Smart Home”? Explain your answer. One risk that might be associated with “smart home” is the fact that since it is through the internet and servers, it could open to hackers. Another risk might be that since smart home is through the internet, it could be open to major devices that affect the day-to-day use of the smart home technology.
CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 8 on Page 8 HW05 Q8. Think about a tabletop convection oven. What advantages would one with an embedded processor have over one without? Are there any disadvantages to having an embedded processor? A tabletop convection oven could have multiple advantages if it had an embedded processor. If a tabletop convection oven had an embedded processor, it could have precise temperature control and even pre-programmed cook systems and settings. The main disadvantage to having tabletop convection oven with an embedded processor, would be price, as embedded processors are more expensive, and they make products more expensive.
CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 9 on Page 9 HW05 Q9. What does it mean for there to be a “family of products”? Give one example of a collection of devices that belong to a family of products. A “family of products” refers to a group of related goods or products produced by the same company under the same brand. An example of a collection of devices that belong to s family of products are Apple’s iPhones.

CS 10100 Homework 05 This is Question 10 on Page 10 HW05 Q10. Give an example for each of early, medium, and late binding for the situation where a television set was purchased new this year for residential use. Early binding time for this situation is time before purchase checkout with the vendor selling televisions to the public. Medium binding time is the time after the purchase but before the television is ready to turn on for the first time. Late binding is the time after the television is first turned on at the residence. If you have a binding example that could belong in more than one of the early, medium, and late categories, feel free to use the example one time and choose the binding category as you see fit. An example of early binding in this scenario would be discussing the vendor’s return policy of the TV. Before you buy the TV, you discuss the policy the store has, and you want to know the terms and condition for returning the TV in case it has or you encounter any defects or issues. An example of medium binding in this scenario would be setting up and connecting the TV to your home WiFi. After you buy the TV but before you turn it on, you need to set up the WiFi connection. This is an example of medium binding because it is after the purchase of the TV but before the TV is 100% operational. Finally, an example of late binding in this scenario, would be selecting and choosing a streaming service or platform. After you set up the TV and you turn it on for the first time, you will choose what streaming service to use and subscribe to, such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus. This is an example of late binding because it occurs after the TV is turned on and being used.
