Nicole Chung Human-Computer Interaction 6 October 2023 System: Interactive Meal Planner/Tracker A) What’s the worst-case scenario, and on whom? The worst-case scenario would be if a user with strict dietary restrictions and/or allergies is not provided with crucial information such as ingredients and potential allergens. This limitation would make it near impossible for this type of user to plan and track their meals because the main purpose of their meal planning would be to meet these special dietary needs. The worst case that this limitation could lead to is the user consuming a food that could cause adverse reactions. Specific user types that might face this worst-case scenario include users with food allergies, gluten intolerance, or vegan diets. B) What’s the best scenario of what you are creating, and on whom? The best scenario would be if a student can use this application to successfully plan and track meals that meet their personal dietary and nutritional needs. C) Who might you be excluding? This process and product might be excluding people who lack the knowledge or understanding of the components of nutrition planning and tracking. While it is important to keep in mind that nutrition and diet can look different for people of all different histories and backgrounds, there is a degree of general knowledge that meal planning and tracking requires, such as understanding the different food groups and types. a) What’s your All People statement? All people know the recommended dietary/nutrition guidelines and how to meet them. b) What communities currently do not experience this All People statement? In the U.S, diet and nutrition generally follow a socioeconomic gradient. Nutrition and diet are heavily influenced by access, financial constraints, and one’s relationship to food (which is often shaped by culture and experiences). People facing financial constraints often trade-off better nutrition for lower costs. While food accessibility would not generally be a problem for students eating at campus dining halls, students’ various backgrounds could definitely impact the knowledge on diet and nutrition that they have coming into college. Students of lower socioeconomic backgrounds or students from rural areas may have experiences with financial constraint and/or food deserts that have shaped their understanding of and relationship with food and nutrition in a way that places them outside of this All People statement.
D) How do you equitably engage the people you want to reach (The Source)? I think you equitably engage the people that you want to reach by creating a space that respects and uplifts diverse thoughts. It is important not to push or impose any assumptions or biases onto members of The Source, but rather to embrace the experiences and stories that they share with an open and questioning mind. It is also important to always stay cognizant of the role that members of The Source are being welcomed to play in the design process. Engaging with our target should be to genuinely take in their feedback and input and reflect them in the system design and not just to use them as a means to an end. a) Who is your Target Source? What’s your relationship to them? If any? The people that we intentionally want to reach are UGA students that eat at dining halls and desire support in meal planning and tracking. This need can be present for various different user types. Some specific user types that would fit the target source include athletes who follow a diet/nutrition plan, students with health-related dietary and nutrition needs, and students working on personal weight loss. Beyond these specific user types, many students that are juggling numerous responsibilities are likely experiencing a need for easy meal planning. In my earlier college years, I was a member of this Target Source. As a student eating at the dining halls, I struggled to plan my meals to meet my desired macronutrient consumption, so I empathize with my Target Source and feel a sense of understanding. b) Who is your Impact Source? What’s your relationship to them? If any? Students that do not eat at the UGA dining halls fall outside of the target source. However, they may still interact with this system through their friendships and close relationships (word of mouth). I currently relate to the Excluded Source because I do not eat at the campus dining halls. c) What will you gain by working with The Source? I can gain a more nuanced understanding of the need for this meal planning/tracking system. Working with the Source would allow me to fully see the diverse range of reasons that students have for wanting/needing this kind of system as well as the expectations and preferences that students would have. d) What will The Source gain by working with you? The Source will gain the opportunity to be heard. Working with me would allow users with very specific and often overlooked needs related to meal planning and tracking to bring awareness to their diverse experiences and stories. It is important to involve and include a truly diverse set of individuals in the design process, so I would hope to provide a safe and collaborative space for members of all areas of The Source.
