Thomas Nguyen 1/21/2024 CS319 2-1 Milestone: Interviews and User Personas
Proposed Design As a concerned family member, I want to receive a notification if my relative, who has dementia, walks more than 1,000 steps from home or leaves the stove on for more than 60 minutes so that I can check on their safety. Interview Topics Importance of App Why would an app like this be important to you? How do you currently meet the need this app would provide? What would you like to see in an app designed to help with this? Functions of App What features do you think this app should have? What features do you think the app should not have? What feature are you most interested in for the app? Expectations What is your expected outcome of the app? Are there goals expected of the app? Have you ever used a similar app in the past? What was your experience with the past app?
Interviews Conducting three interviews of potential users of the app, all interviewees had one main important expectation of the app. Their expectations was an app to give them a sense of connection and peace of mind for a relative who has dementia. I interviewed Timothy who has never used a smiliar app in the past and does not have any family members with dementia, but has friends that have family members with dementia. Timothy stated, while this app would currently not be of use to him, he does see the app beneficial for other who have family members with dementia. He stated, notifications alerting members of family would be the best use case of the app, as it would give fast delivering messages through the app. I questioned, “How would you think we can track members with dementai?” Timothy stated, have some type of GPS tracker like an Air tag would be beneficial. Other suggestions were bracelets, necklaces, and rings that the family member with dementia could wear as many dementia patients leave their home without nothing and usually forget their phones. My next interview was with Tina who actually is diagnosed with onset dementia and currently faces short term memory loss. Tina stated, she feels this app would help herself and family members as it would give them a peace of mind knowing they would be able to locate her if she were to get lost and leave her house suddenly due to her condition. She also gave the suggestions of wearing a bracelet or necklace as a type of GPS tracker. Recommendations she gave the app were notifying memebers if they left their home after a certain distance. Have safety locations set up through the app that notifies family members if a person with dementia has gone to an area they are known to frequent when dealing with dementia symptoms. Tina also mentioned, having the app setup so emergency services and police notified if a family member with dementia is gone for a certain amount of time and is still unable to be reached.

My last interview was with Malia who has a family member with dementia. Malia has used an app similar but it is connected to a GPS tracking device and is connected with the app. Malia stated, the app works well if the GPS tracking device is with the person who suffers from dementia, but if the device is not on them, the app then becomes useless. The functions she would like to see on the app is alerts if a stove or car is left on. A possible connection to home cameras if accessible to see if a family member with dementia has left their home. Malia stated, notifications alerting family members would be the most effective use for the app. Anaylsis After conducting these interviews, a consensus for an app to alert family members with has relatives with dementia would be beneficial and necessary. This app would provide families with a sense of security and ease of mind knowing they would be able to keep in contact with family members with dementia. While they are apps of similar kinds, ensuring an accessible GPS tracking device on the family member with dementia is a necessity. Bracelets, watches, rings, and necklaces are current proposals to use with the app, as a device on the affected family member would always be on them. The target audience is all ages and people who have family members affected by dementia. All ages old enough to understand the app and uses of the app can use the app to recieve notifications with family members affected by dementia.
