3-3 Milestone: Paper Prototype Thomas Nguyen 1/28/2024 Southern New Hampshire University CS-319 UI/UX Design and Development
Prototype Screens and Goals The first screen of the app will serve the purpose of the login interface. When users open the app, they will be directed to this first screen. I have named the app GuardianFinder as it serves the purpose of guarding and finding relatives with dementia. The name serves the purpose of giving a sense of protection and safety for users using this app. In the login interface users will have the option to enter their user email associated with their account and sign in to gain access to the app. If there is a first-time user, they will have to create a new account which will lead new users a page to register their account. At the bottom of the login interface, there is the question: “What is GuardianFinder?”. When users click that button, they will be directed to a new page explaining what the app is about and the intended use. I have a color scheme in mind which will be a soft blue or green with a white background.
The second screen will serve for first time account users and for users adding a new device. The purpose of this screen is for users to register new devices associated with the app and the device their relative will be wearing. To register devices easily there will be QR codes on the devices which can be scanned. Users can also input the devices manually with the associated id number on the device. New users can also join existing accounts, for example if grandma has dementia, her son, and two grandkids can all create accounts and have access to the GuardianFinder app. No new products will have to be bought and as long as one device is connected to an account, the device is not limited to any amount of how many users can connect to it. Users will also have the option to sign out in case they do not have a device yet or want to complete the registration later. There will be a support option at the bottom of the second screen interface in case users need help on how to register the device or connect accounts to the device.

The third screen is the main interface of the app and provides the features of the app. If there is a device already connected and users connected to the app, a GPS map with an updated location will show where their family member who is wearing a device is currently located. The device whether it is a bracelet, watch, or necklace will provide the GPS status of connected or not. There is a circle next to the GPS symbol, if it is colored green that means the device is connected, if red the device is offline. There will be a charge symbol knowing how much charge the device will have and to alert the wearer if they need to charge the device. Pin symbol is to currently pin the location of where the wearer of the device is currently located. Call is to call the user of the wearable device if their phone is with them. The login interface will also have an
updated location of how long the wearer has been at and how long if they have moved, they have been in transit. There will also be an alarm symbol in case family members cannot get in contact with the wearer and it will alert other family members connected to the device, they are unable to get into contact or locate the wearer. There will also be an option to contact first responders, emergency medical services or police in case there is an emergency occurring with the wearer of the device. Within the main interface users will have the option to access user settings in the top right corner of the screen. In the user settings they will have access to account information, be able to set user preferences, and tools for the app. The top left corner will contain additional drop-down options including signing out of the app. At the bottom of the interface there will be options to see users connected to the device, so users can essentially see other family members or guardians who are also monitoring the wearer of the device. An option to add another device which will lead back to screen 2. Lastly, there will be a support option to assist users with the app. Interviews I conducted two interviews with a friend and coworker. The first interview was conducted through Zoom with my friend. The photos were emailed to my friend who looked over the paper prototypes and gave insight on how to improve the design. The interview lasted approximately 15 minutes. The first interview, my friend stated the visual representation of the interfaces for the login and registering a new device were designed well and easy to follow. My friend recommended integrating face enabling login for the user and the user wearing the device. The user of the device is the one afflicted with dementia so if they were accessing the app,
enabling face identification recognition would be easier for them to login. My friend recommended a soft green scheme to visually represent the buttons with a white background to complement the buttons. My friend did state in screen three, there was a lot of clutter and recommended moving some of the features on the main interface to the additional drop-down menu. My friend recommended moving the alarm and the three buttons at the bottom of the interface to the drop-down menu. The second interview was an in-person interview with a coworker that lasted approximately 20 minutes. My coworker analyzed all three prototypes in my presence. On the first screen, my coworker liked how the login was straightforward and thought it was a good choice to include the button for explaining what GuardianFinder is about. My coworker also recommended an option for enabling face identification for easier login. My coworker asked if users will always be directed to the second screen once they logged in and was assured, users would only be directed to the second screen if they are new users or if they access the option from the third screen prototype. On the third screen prototype, my coworker recommended adding a video option if possible. If the device wearer also has their phone on them, users would also be able to contact them via video and have a better understanding of their location through video. My coworker also recommended the option for medical history of the device wearer and the input could be included in the additional drop-down menu options in the left-hand corner. Lastly, in the option of connected accounts, my coworker recommended an option to call the other accounts through the app instead of having to get out of the app and contact them through the phone contact pages.

After conducting these interviews, I found it easier to conduct the interviews in person as you can interact with the interviewee and have input conducted in front of you. The challenges of using paper prototypes is that you have an accurate representation of what you want the app to achieve but are not sure, if the final product will come out they way it is presented in the app. Overall, I found the interviews to be a success and helpful in the direction of the creation of the UX/UI design of the app. Future Update After conducting the interviews and based on the interviewee’s recommendations, I plan on adding enabling face identification login as it gives a faster process for users to login the application. I also plan to add a section for patient medical history, which will help family members and emergency medical services know existing medical issues the family member with dementia has. I found interviews to be beneficial as they gave second eyes and opinions on the app design. I may think something looks better and will work well with app while another set of eyes will see something differently and can improve the design.
