TEACHING STANDARDS Teaching Standards Ashley Moore Taylor University TTT510 Intro to Education Profession Dr. Watkins 1/22/2023 Teaching Standards The Indiana Academic Standards for Visual Arts K-5 will be a very helpful asset when it comes to curriculum planning. This set of standards pinpoints what students should know and what they should be able to do in art class. There are four main themes listed; creating, presenting, responding, and connecting. These expectations are not a curriculum in itself rather a guideline to creating meaningful learning experiences. The first standard is about sparking an attitude of creativity and innovation in students. How do I get my students to take create risks and how does that positively affect their creative process. One way to encourage this train of thought is to allow students the freedom to explore
TEACHING STANDARDS through imaginative play with materials. Another way is to have them come up with multiple ways or approaches to an art problem or design. Innovation in art is learned through exploration and trying new things. I think this comes easier to younger kids because they are not as afraid to fail, I hope to encourage my older students to care more about the process instead of the fear of the outcome. The next standard comes from the idea that art history and traditions help us create art today. I think this goes along with the thought that to break the rules you must know them first. In art it is important to have a good understanding of the elements and principles of art to creat a harmonious work of art. Art history can help us understand different techniques and origins of art. I enjoyed the subset that left room for students to use different materials to explore and find what peaks their interest. Not every medium of art will be a crowd favorite. We all have different interest and strengths but we can’t find out what that is unless we are able to freely explore. Trial and error are a big part of the investigation standard. One of my weaknesses as a teacher and also a mom is not wanting my kids to fail. I would often times push them to get something perfect on the first try but I forget that it is through the process that they learn. A standard that is often times overlooked is about safety in the art room. How do I teach my students to carefully treat tools, materials, and equipment? Obviously, I do not want anyone getting hurt or injured in my room so this is something that must be talked about frequently. With the freedom to create their is still a safety standard that students must respect and follow. I think this begins at a young age and as they get older they have more freedom to use tools like scissors and sharp clay tools. Reflection should always happen after creating something. What are the positives and negatives of the work of art. Can I teach students to critique artwork in a constructive way. I
TEACHING STANDARDS believe reflection should cause growth if done correctly. I think this is a step often missed in the art classroom with younger grades. I would like to see if I can incorporate more reflection into my projects. I think the standards have show me some areas I need to concentrate and focus on more in my own classroom. They are great guidelines to make sure my students are growing in the right direction. This will be very beneficial to my teaching career.
