Describe the relationship between your chosen research problem and the field of study. Include answers to the following: What is the research problem you would like to explore further? How does your research problem relate to your field of study? As a criminal justice major, I have taken a special interest in the law enforcement aspect of the degree. I have chosen as my research project to explore the relationship between law enforcement and the reporting, collecting of data and investigations involving missing and/or murdered Indigenous females in North America. How can law enforcement be more proactive in obtaining this information to investigate their cases? I relate to both topics in that I currently work in the law enforcement field and am an Indigenous female. Evaluate the impact of methodology trends for your chosen research problem. Include answers to the following questions: What methodologies are commonly used to study your research problem? Why do you think that is? Mixed methodology would be more commonly used to study my research problem. First, by using qualitative research it would allow the investigators to take an initial look at the case and follow up through field research and interviews with family or members of the community. After the initial observation, these findings can then be used to determine the data and condense them into numbers, quantitative research.
What methodologies are less commonly used to study your research problem? Why do you think that is? Certain aspects of qualitative research, such as focus groups, would not likely be used in finding a correlation between the missing and/or murdered groups and acquiring more information to help in their investigations. That said, there are also quantitative aspects of the research, such as survey research, that would not be beneficial. The two works in conjunction with one another taking certain aspects from each type of research method. How would finding few research study methodologies impact your research question? Finding few research study methodologies would impact your research question by questioning the validity of your findings. Without a few reliable sources it is difficult to compare findings to both justify your study or debunk the contrary. Determine methods for overcoming challenges that impact the development of complex research questions. Include answers to the following questions: If you cannot find a type of methodology, what do you think that says about your research problem? If one is unable to find a type of methodology it may be due to a few different problems. Data on the research may be limited. One of my listed problems is how to better data collection and give information to the people investigating cases to produce a better outcome. Finding the right kind of data is detrimental in helping with these investigations. If it is not able to be located it may hinder the research. A second issue may be not looking in the right direction for the data you are trying to find. Some topics may have more information in other areas that you have not thought of looking at, being focused on just one question.

How could you potentially still use your chosen research problem and find research studies that use each methodology? What changes might you need to make so you can find examples of each methodology? The initial research problem can still be used. Taking the time to pick apart the research question you have and deciding if it is too broad of a question or even too vague to get the information needed to conduct your study will assist in finding the information you are looking to obtain. Changing the key terms, tweaking the question itself and looking in other areas of study may assist you in finding what exactly you are trying to find and making it fit into your initial research.
