CNT1512 04/02/2023 Chapter 10 - Implementing Wireless LAN Security Assignment (Canvas) 1. Why is IEEE 802.1X considered to be the most secure type of authentication? IEEE 802.1X is the most secure type of authentication because it uses a RADIUS server to authenticate users. The RADIUS server evaluates a user’s credentials to see whether they should be granted access to the network. 2. Using the Internet and other print sources, research IEEE 802.1X and RADIUS servers. IEEE 802.1X and RADIUS servers use unique user credentials, rather than a single password used for everyone on the network. If a single password was being used, it could be stolen with little effort allowing anyone with the password to access the network. 3. When was this standard developed? Why? The IEEE 802.1X standard was originally developed back in 1999 by 3Com, HP and Microsoft. It was approved as a standard later in 2001. There was a need for organizations to be able to their networks in areas where they were available to the public, like public buildings. This standard would prevent unauthorized users from accessing the network at the switch port level. 4. Where is it being used today? There is still a use for IEEE 802.1X today on local area networks (LANs). Like in the past, 802.1X is still used for securing both wired and wireless networks using RADIUS servers for authentication. Typically, they are used by large enterprises, rather than smaller personal home networks. Sources: Fruhlinger, J., & Snyder, J.
