CNT1512 03/23/2023 Chapter 09 - WEP Attack Tools Assignment (Canvas) WEP was introduced in 1997, but by 2005, the security behind WEP was broken. WEP networks can now be cracked very easily and quickly, and many different attack tools exist for doing so. There are tools available for discovering networks, cracking a network’s password/key, network sniffing, injecting data packets into a network, and even network cracking tools optimized for mobile devices. There are WEP attack tools available for Windows OS, Mac OS, and Linux. Many of these tools are free and open source. In fact, some of the most popular tools for cracking WEP are available for free. Three of the most popular WEP attack tools are: Aircrack-ng : This tool quickly cracks network passwords by capturing packets. It can crack both WEP and WPA PSK (WPA 1 and 2) networks. This tool is also able to monitor and export network traffic, as well as test a network’s capabilities through packet capture and injection. WEPAttack : This is a free, open-source tool used to crack WEP keys by testing dictionary words until the correct key is found. This tool is able to capture network dump files as well. Kismet : This is a free tool for monitoring, sniffing, and wardriving attacks. It can capture data packets and export them to be analyzed by other programs. System Requirements: Aircrack-ng : The wireless network card must be able to inject packets. This tools is available on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and a number of other operating systems. WEPAttack : This tool is available on Linux. It is necessary to have a working LAN card. Kismet : This tool is available on all major operating systems, as well as several other platforms. Works with any wireless card. WEP Cracking Speed: Aircrack-ng : This tool works by gathering encrypted packets in order to recover the WEP key, and typically succeeds very quickly. WEPAttack : This tool works by testing millions of words until the correct network key is found, so this type of attack can take quite some time. Kismet : The packets captured by this tool can be analyzed using another open-source tool that is able to crack WEP passwords. How quickly this works depends on which other tool is used. Advantages and Disadvantages: Aircrack-ng : Free, open-source, available on all major operating systems. You must have a wireless card capable of injecting packets into the target network, or the attack will not work. WEPAttack : Free, open-source, available on Linux. Not available on Windows or MacOS. Because it uses a dictionary-based approach to key cracking, this process can take some time. This is an active attack, rather than a passive attack, so there is a higher risk that the attack may be discovered by the target. Kismet: Free, open source, available on all major operating systems. Uses passive attack rather than active attack and is therefore less likely to be detected by the target.
