6682A/6682B PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT
ASSIGNMENT (CMHC & MFC)
Using this template, you will select a writing topic from the provided “Think It Over” list.
Identifying a minimum of three scholarly references to support your perspectives and
reflecting upon your internship site, you will submit an analysis of your chosen topic regarding
Professional Identity.
OVERVIEW OF SELECTED TOPIC___________________________________
What topic did you select from the list? Why did you choose this specific topic? Discuss the
relevance of this topic to your development as a counseling professional.
The topic that I picked was the first question – How do personal beliefs influence your
ethical practice as a counselor?
The significance of this question stems from the fact that
counseling ethics are paramount. Someone, like the client, could be harmed in the process if we
don't follow ethical standards, which is something I never want to happen.
Michelle E. Wade
(2015) asserts that a counselor's main duty is to uphold the dignity of their clients and advance
their welfare.
A counselor needs to appreciate the diversity of their clients and be attentive to
their cultural background to be seen as competent. The ACA Code of Ethics Standard A.4.b. does
specify that counselors should refrain from enforcing "their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and
behaviors." (Michelle E. Wade, 2015). A profession in counseling is not one that is simple or
where learning and personal development remain stagnant.
I frequently hear about burnout from other professionals, counselors I work with, and
instructors. As counselors, we retain an ethical obligation to seek out training, supervision, or
individual therapy if interactions with our clients are having an adverse effect on us to the point
that it could influence our ability to make professional decisions (Michelle E. Wade, 2015).
Counselors are accountable for keeping an eye out for any indications of impairment in both
themselves as well as other counselors, as stated in Standard C.2.g. (ACA Code of Ethics, 2014).
Clients are the people who suffer when a counselor's private struggles take center stage in the
therapeutic alliance. Counselors have an ethical duty to respect these principles. I don't want to
go against a code of ethics and ruin my client relationship.
COUNSELOR ROLE REFLECTION___
__________________
How does your chosen topic present itself within your counseling role? In what ways could
you demonstrate intentionality within your counseling role with regard to your topic?
The subject I chose addresses ethics and personal values in counseling, and it is
forbidden for counselors to bring their own convictions into the therapeutic setting. What
matters is counseling ethics and abiding by the ACA Code of Ethics regulations. Among the
principles stipulated by the ACA Code of Ethics include the following:
Encouraging the
freedom to decide how one's life will unfold, Nonmaleficence: Refusing to engage in harmful
activities, Beneficence is the act of improving mental health and welfare for the benefit of both
the person and society. Justice is the practice of treating people fairly and promoting equality
and fairness. Fidelity is the quality of maintaining one's word and honoring agreements,
especially when it comes to upholding one's obligations of trust in professional partnerships
(Michelle E. Wade, 2015). Honesty: Behaving sincerity when interacting with those with whom
counselors collaborate on a professional basis. When a counselor minimizes a client's
personal convictions and values, that individual may suffer consequences. If a counselor
passes judgment on a client, they are not acting in the client's best interests.
I intend to make sure that I succeed in showing that I am a counselor intentionally, and
adhering to ethical standards is one method to do this. The idea that effective counselors pick
tactics and helping behaviors alongside a defined goal and direction represents a trait that
appears in modern research and study. When a client's behavior falls outside of my purview, I
shall refer them out instead of working beyond it. When individuals are making significant life
decisions, licensed professional counselors are in a unique position to influence them. Being
in this position is quite strong and with an enormous amount of responsibility (Schmidt, J.,
1994). Intentionality on the part of a counselor influences the scope and trajectory of these
therapeutic alliances. Lastly, the capacity to look for alternate answers and select from a
variety of tactics while assisting clients in making decisions and resolving issues is a crucial
component of a counselor's intentionality (Schmidt, J., 1994).
KEY ASPECTS OF THE FIELD PLACEMENT SITE
__________________
What characteristics of your field site are relevant to your chosen topic? What assets and
challenges does your field site offer with regard to your chosen topic?
The goal statement of Tri-County Help Center includes empowerment, equality, and
education as part of the ideals under counselor ethics. The guiding principle of Tri-County is
that we shall respect, encourage, and believe in the potential of everyone who comes to us for
assistance (Tricountyhelp.org, 2023). We listen to individuals and assist them in realizing their
objectives. As workers for Tri-County, we oppose the oppression of any individual or group,
regardless of the basis for their oppression—be it victimization, race, religion, ethnic origin,
sexual orientation, mental health, or any other factor (Tricountyhelp.org, 2023). We will also
endeavor to create a community that is respectful and safe" (Tricountyhelp.org, 2023).
Among our fundamental principles are the following: empowerment: We're dedicated to
supporting those who come to us for assistance in exploring their alternatives and making
decisions. Holism: We understand that the problems our clients encounter extend beyond
problems with interpersonal violence. Humanity first: The TCHC was founded to assist
humans. As a result, the agency will protect the liberties of the individuals it serves to privacy,
respect, and integrity in all its initiatives, policies, and practices.
I am really interested in
using it as a theoretical orientation as well as a co-facilitator in the dialectical behavioral
therapy group at TCHC, which teaches mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion control, and
interpersonal effectiveness (Tricountyhelp.org, 2023). Because we are in an Appalachian
region where many people still do not accept the LGBTQ+ population, TCHC has challenges
from some segments of the community. As a result, we are always working to educate these
individuals.
