Case Study 7 – PT/Ex Sc. Background
7-2 Respecting the Athlete
As the Head of Athletic Training for the Bowler University the Men’s Football (soccer) team,
have led the way with three straight titles. You have witnessed a half dozen of your players
develop skills from a spirited freshman to now a mature senior.
The Athletic Director knows that you are being recruited by the National Olympic Committee to
take the place of the retiring Director of “Physio”, Glen Goulding as his successor. One more
successful season at Bowling and you can write your own ticket.
During the past Spring and through the summer, several of the players rented a house together
and began an intensive off-season weight training session apart from that prescribed by the
team’s strength training professional.
Upon return to the pitch in the Fall, you are overwhelmed by the immense gains in the physical
structure of these players. In pre-season games a couple of the players have been “red-carded”
for abusive language and “cheap-shots” which were foreign to past playing behavior.
Unlike past years, those players are complaining of persistent pain in the knees and hips
following practice or game situations. The massage therapist shares with you that these players
have an inordinate amount of canine on their back and shoulders.
During the weekly Athletic Department Meeting the Athletic Director shares with the coaches
and staff new guidelines for performance enhancing drug testing which will be random checked
by you as part of your AT duties.
Your mind begins to race.
Questions:
a.
What are the guidelines you would use to determine if anabolic/androgenic drug use was
being used by your athletes? Be specific.
b.
Would you target these Football players from the outset? Explain your ethical rationale?
c.
Are there safeguards you would put in place to protect the four Biomedical Principles
(Page172) of the athlete. Be specific.
7-3
Funneling Budgets
At the end of the athletic year, you assess your medical budget and determine that you have
overspent your line-items by a considerable amount. Review of each line-item shows that one
particular physician group has recommended and performed several knee operations during
which she used experimental techniques and medications to repair traumatic injuries.
You had no idea the athletes were being treated this fashion because these expenditures were not
approved by you as agreed upon by the University and her “Smythe” corporation from the outset
of the season. There are written contracts to support this. This experimental use of select
medications and materials has been specifically outlawed by the
Inter-Collegiate Athletic
Association.
A private donor who is aware of the situation, has come forward to cover the costs of the
procedures. You express concern to the AD and the VP for Student Development as this is illegal
action. The AD and VP find a loophole to incorporate this “donation” through several creative
budget actions. You are told, “not to worry.”
This week you discover that one student-athlete is suing the school because the Smythe Partners
had “botched” her knee replacement and destroyed her future athletic career. The litigation has
been “media-hyped” as the scandal of the year at your school. If found responsible, the
University may be put on athletic probation for its involvement for up to five years.
You have been asked to present your perspective of the situation to the President’s Council.
Rumor has it that you may be the “fall guy” for this scandal.
Questions:
a.
How do you ethically justify (Page 172) that you are not responsible for this scandal?
b.
Do you know who should be held responsible for this dilemma?
c.
What do you think should
be enacted in order to provide justice for you and the athlete?
