Banker, R.D., Bardhan, I., & Asdemir, O. (2006). Understanding the impact of collaboration
software on product design and development.
Information Systems Research
,
17
(4), 352-373.
The quiz will involve selections from the following questions. You should use the
interteaching session to find the answers in the article and verify the answers with your
partner. You may take notes. The quiz will allow you to have access to the article. It is not
necessary to hand in the answers. Interteaching provides an opportunity for you to confirm
your answers and understanding with another student.
You may ask questions on this material during the interteaching session.
1.
Define
collaborative product commerce
.
Collaborative product commerce is defined as a new web based technology that assists engineers
in streamlining product designs in the development process that requires manual intervention.
2.
Why did the authors find it important to consider both direct and indirect effects of CPC?
It was important to consider both direct and indirect effects of CPC because the use of this new
web based technology helps ease the burden of designers that work in teams when considering
factors such as product quality, cycle time, and cost.
3.
What is one of the most important issues in improving R&D productivity?
Facilitating inter team collaboration in order to mitigate the impact of information security and
reduce ambiguity during product design.
4.
What was the general finding of the Hoegl et al. (2004) study?
The study found that inter team collaboration was successful when working on projects.
5.
As a class of software, what is CPC supposed to facilitate?
CPC’s facilitate communication, team building, and information sharing between product
designers during the product development phase.
6.
Why is effective collaboration critical to mitigate the risks emanating from poor
coordination?
Effective communication/collaboration is important for mitigating the risks from poor
coordination because of team interdependencies and volatility of information being shared
during the development process. Poor coordination could lead to redundancy, duplication of
efforts, delays, and rework.
7.
According to the authors, what does recent research suggest about the importance of rich
media?
Rich media may be important when time to market is an important factor and when multiple
parties must perform complex work in an integrated way. Studies show that media-rich
communications have a positive effect on client relations through enabling communication
capabilities that strengthen customer-supplier relationships
8.
On the media richness spectrum, where is electronic media such as CPC classified?
CPC is classified as high end on the media richness level due to its complexity of organizational
phenomena.
9.
What is the basic premise of CPC implementation?
Improvement in product design cycle time, cost, and quality can be attained by greater
collaboration among product design teams.
10. What is the difference between explicit and tacit knowledge?
Explicit knowledge refers to data design that is easily codified, stored, and transferred while tacit
knowledge is codified through the experience and critical judgment of an engineer’s designs.
11. Briefly characterize the four types of processes involved in effective knowledge creation.
How does CPC facilitate each type?
The four types of processes involved in effective knowledge creation are: Socialization,
externalization, internalization, and combination. CPCs facilitate socialization through the use of
virtual team meetings and chat rooms to help teams share information. CPCs facilitate
externalization through electronic blackboards which helps teams visually look at product
designs. CPCs facilitate internalization through 3D visualization, simulation, and graphical
analysis capabilities. CPCs facilitate combination through the integration of existing data designs
into new product designs.
12. Why is CPC implementation considered to be associated with greater improvements in
product design quality?
CPC implementation is considered to be associated with greater improvements in product design
quality because it allows design teams to release preliminary information early and lets
downstream users coordinate future design iterations by providing greater visibility into the
change management process.
13. What is
product design cycle time
?
Product design cycle time refers to the time passed from when the product is first conceptualized
until the final product is accepted by users.
14. What is the effect of CPC on product design times?
CPCs shortens this time gap which allows product designers to create better and more efficient
final designs with better storage and retrieval capabilities.
15. How does CPC impact product development costs?
CPCs decrease product development costs by reducing the amount of staff needed to work on
these product designs as well as reducing the need for documentation and other design storage
costs.
16. Briefly characterize the research methodology. What was the data in this research and
where did it come from?
The methodology consisted of a survey in which participants were selected from 36 firms to
answers questions to an 18 page questionnaire regarding the usage of CPC software across the
product development life cycle, types of business processes that CPC software support, and
the business benefits associated with product development outcomes after CPC implementation.
17. How was a change in outcomes evaluated for companies that had implemented the CPC
software?
Managers were asked to identify two typical products one designed before the CPC solution was
implemented and the other designed after CPC implementation. We collected data for each
survey question, before and after implementation of CPC. Respondents were asked to provide
their responses on a seven-point Likert scale. For each variable, the difference between before
and after CPC implementation responses provides an estimate of the change in outcomes.
18. Among the six factors identified, which one was not significant for changes at the .01
level?
The difference in product size, before and after CPC implementation was quite small.
19. What do the results show regarding the impact of CPC on the change in collaboration?
The impact of CPC on collaboration is statistically significant, and its impact is greater than that
of other variables that are associated with the level of collaboration.
20. Based on the interviews with managers, what was the effect on CPC-enabled
collaboration?
Managers responded that CPC-enabled collaboration was associated with improvements in work
flows related to more efficient development cycle management.
21. Give three limitations of the study identified by the authors.
The authors measured CPC implementation as a binary variable. The second limitation was that
their firm sample was identified with the help of a single consulting firm. The third limitation is
that they do not distinguish between inter and intrateam design collaborations in the context of
our survey design.
22. In terms of management implications, what is the impact of collaboration on cost
savings?
The impact of collaboration on cost savings is attributed to product design and development.
Cost savings also included reduced inventory exposure due to greater design reuse and
significant reduction in design staff time spent in fieldwork for product support if product
changes or if errors are significant.

What was the most valuable information that you learned from this article?
I believe that the most valuable piece of information that I learned from this article is how the
collaborative process can be made to be more effective and efficient through the use of CPCs
which can be made to better understand how IT can be used in the process of product design.
What topic in this material gave you trouble?
I felt like the topic that gave me the most trouble was how the role of IT can be used to facilitate
inter-team collaboration since the article they chose for their literature review only used a small
sample size of projects from a single firm which limited the scope of their understanding.
Do you think this article was easy or difficult to read? Please explain your answer.
Overall, I felt as if this article was fairly difficult due to the complexity of the topic as well as a
highly complicated methodology. I also felt as if my level of familiarity with the subject had to
do with my perception of the article.
