Practice Test A - Writing Task 1: Writing an Email
You recently made reservations for dinner at a very famous and expensive restaurant in town.
However, the meal and the service were terrible. The restaurant manager was not available to solve
the problem, so you left without a resolution.
State what problems you had with the food you ordered.
Complain about the service.
Describe how you want the restaurant to resolve the problem to your satisfaction.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction for my recent visit.
Under my recommendation, my friend and I visited your restaurant last night, but the food that provide to us was unacceptable.
We ordered a signature pizza and a seafood combo for share. The pizza was clearly not freshly cooked because it was cold and
hard. The taste of the pizza is also far worse than my prior experiences. The seafood combo looks dirty, and I even saw some
muds on the shell of the calms.
Moreover, the staffs that was serving us were extremely impatient after I raised my concern regarding the food’s quality. The
restaurant manager neither provide any explanations nor replaced our food. Considering the reputation of the restaurant and
the price of the food, I was very dissatisfied about the service that we received yesterday.
May I suggest that you start an internal investigation immediately to resolve the food’s quality issue and reinforce the staff
training to improve customer service. I hope to see some improvements by my next visit, otherwise I will cross this place from
my dining list.
Yours faithfully,
Eddie Wang

Practice Test A - Writing Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions
City Development Survey
You live in a small town of 10,000 people. A large green area in the center of town is undeveloped. The
city has sent out an opinion survey to see what residents would like to have built in that area.
Option A:
Shopping Complex: This shopping mall would include restaurants, a large supermarket, and
a movie theatre.
Option B:
Recreational Park: This park would include a sports complex, a large green area, and a small
petting zoo.
For a variety of reasons, I believe building a shopping complex would be more beneficial.
Due to the smaller population size, we do not have any large supermarkets or movie theaters in our town. We must drive at
least two hours to the larger cities to do grocery shopping or watch movies. Building our own shopping plaza will not only
provide a more convenient lifestyle to the local residents, but also will attract people from nearby towns to visit us. In that way,
our city would become more popular and benefited from the commercial activities.
Another reason is that the shopping mall barely require any financial supports from the city after completion. The business
owners will be responsible for any maintenance works. In opposite, a recreational park will require a long-time maintenance
and eventually bring financial burdens to the city.
My final point is that we already have enough parks and playgrounds in the city. The benefits of building a new recreational park
would be limited. The shopping mall is more attractive and is the only missing puzzle of the city amenities.
I hope my opinion will be considered and look forward to seeing some positive changes to our town.

Practice Test B - Writing Task 1: Writing an Email
You and your family visit the local shopping mall every week. However, it has become more and more
difficult to find a parking spot recently. You would like to let the shopping mall manager know about
this problem.
Describe the problem you are having with the mall’s parking.
Explain what you and your family have to do in order to visit the shopping mall now.
Provide some suggestions for how the mall manager can solve this problem.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regard to the parking issue of your shopping center.
My family and I usually visit this plaza to do grocery shopping. Everything works great in the past two years until recently I find
out the parking lot is always full. Cars are lined up on the driveway and at the entrance. This has caused an inconvenient
shopping experience for the visitors and created many safety issues.
Today I visited the shopping mall again and waited almost 45-minute for an available spot and it certainly was not a pleasant
experience for my two-year-old boy. I think next week, I'd rather park a few blocks away and then walk to the stores. However,
this means I must carry all the bags and walk through a few streets before I can load them into my car.
I'd like to suggest that you speak with the adjacent paid parking lot's owner. Having an agreement that allows your customers to
use their parking space would be helpful.
Alternatively, you can reimburse the parking fees for anyone who cannot find a
parking spot and forced to park somewhere else.
I hope you can address this issue as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Eddie

Practice Test B - Writing Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions
Childcare Survey
You work in a very big office. There is a popular and cheap restaurant in the building. The boss is
thinking of removing the restaurant and replacing it with a childcare facility for the working parents in
the office. You have been asked to respond to an opinion survey.
Option A: I think we should keep the restaurant.
Option B: I think we should replace the restaurant with a childcare facility.
For a variety of reasons, I believe replacing the restaurant with a brand-new childcare facility is a wonderful idea.
To begin with, many working parents need to wake up early and drop off their kids at the daycares to avoid morning traffic
congestions. If the childcare facility and their office are at the same location, then these parents could have extra time to sleep.
In this way, they will be more energetic and work more effectively in the workspace.
Furthermore, education is a very profitable industry compare to catering. Although the restaurant is popular (because of its low
price), it does not bring any financial benefits to our company. On the opposite, the tuition of childcare can range from $1,500
to $2,000 per month, which can easily cover the initial investment and provide an appealing return.
Last but not least, the restaurant requires daily food supplies from the market and the delivery truck always blocks the entrance
doors of the building while they are loading. This could potentially cause some safety issues when natural disasters happening,
such as earthquakes and floods. Childcare facilities certainly will not have similar issues.
I hope my opinion can be helpful. (197)

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to express my gratitude to you for organizing such an amazing community picnic event last week. My family and I
enjoyed the potluck immensely and wish we can repeat it next year.
However, there is one thing that I would like to bring to your attention. Many people, including myself, have allergies to certain
types of food. For example, both of my parents and I can't eat anything that contains nuts or peaches. We always need to ask for
the ingredients of a dish, otherwise, we might end up with a serious headache. Therefore, I believe requiring all participants to
prepare a list of ingredients and a small description for each potluck dish would be helpful and appropriate. In this way, people
with allergies can enjoy different foods without worrying about their health situation.
Besides providing the list of ingredients requests, I think next year we can also set a theme for the potluck event. Each year we
should have a dress code and different types of cuisine requirement, such as Chinese, Indian, and Italian, etc.
Thank you again for spending the time to organize the event for us.
Best,
Eddie

For a variety of reasons, I believe it is better to keep producing the print version.
While many of us have fully embraced the technology, some elderly residents are likely having some challenges to use the
mobile device. A large percentage of the local seniors have been purchasing the local newspapers for years, and this trend is
likely to continue in the future. If your company suddenly changes to online version only, the elderly residents will lose their
primary source of information.
Although I always enjoy reading news from my smartphone, there are some situations that I prefer to read a printed issue. For
example, If I am taking an airplane that does not have any internet access, I would buy a newspaper at the airport before
boarding, so I can read instead of just setting for serval hours.
Furthermore, the feeling of a warm newspaper and the smell of the ink are the feathers that online edition can never delivery to
the readers. I think reading a physical newspaper is not only a unique experience but also healthier than reading on screens.
I hope my opinion can be considered. (190)

Dear store manager,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the recent visit on the grand opening day of your store.
About two weeks ago, I received your advisement in the mail, and I was excited because the marketing brochure included a 20%
off deal on iPhone 13. Since I need a new cell phone, I decided to visit your department store on the grand opening day and
purchase the item at a discounted price.
I arrived at the store around 8:30 AM and disappointedly found out the iPhone 13 was listed at its original price. I explained the
situation to one of your staff and expected to purchase the item with a 20% discount as your ad described. Although the staff
was friendly and patient, he refused to honor the discount for me. Eventually, I left with dissatisfaction.
If your store cannot honor this promotion, then the advertisement is not only misleading to customers, but also against the local
law. Since your marketing material distributed in my mail does not indicate any restrictions of this promotion, I believe I am
entitled to purchase the iPhone at the suggested price.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Eddie (202)
While many arguments tend to explain why using barbecues should be permitted, in my opinion, the benefits of preventing
grills on our apartment balconies outweigh its drawbacks for several reasons.
First, our apartment building mainly consists of lumbers or flammable materials. The gas-operated grill will not only cause
smoke but also bring many safety issues to our community. According to the local newspaper, one of the complexes in the
downtown area was burned down last month due to a barbecue mis-operation accident.
Besides the safety concern, using barbecues on the balconies is not the only method to enjoy summer food at our apartment.
As part of the amenity set, there are three outdoor grill areas in our community. Not to mention that we are only 0.1 miles away
from the regional park that providing plenty of picnic options to residents.
Finally, allowing the tenants to use barbecues in their unit will potentially require the property management team to spend
more on the repair and maintenance of the building. As a result, the financial burden will eventually shift to the tenant via
increasing rent.
To conclude, I believe we should not grant the right to use barbeques on balconies. (197)

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to inform you about some changes that I would like to make to my current loan.
I purchased a townhome this summer and got a montage from your bank. The loan's original principal was $200,000 with a 30-
year fixed interest rate, which means I need to make an equal installment each month for the next 30 years. If I recall correctly,
my current monthly payment is only $1,200.
However, recently the executive team of my firm has assigned me as the new regional manager. As part of the promotion
benefits, I will receive a much higher salary package. Therefore, my affordability has increased significantly in terms of making
the monthly payment.
As that said, I want to make some modifications to the loan so I can repay the balance at a faster pace. One possible option is
changing the loan term from 30-year to 15-year. The purpose is to increase the debt service from $1,200 to at least $2,400.
Please take a look at my file and let me know if that is possible. I am happy to discuss more if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Eddie (193)
While many arguments tend to explain why people should wear scents in our workplace, in my opinion, the benefits of having a
scent-free policy would outweigh its drawbacks for several reasons.
First, many individuals in our company are extremely sensitive to perfumes. The strong scents might cause them headache,
breath shortness, and some allergies. From the health and safety standpoints, we certainly should prevent any strong smells in
our workplace.
Moreover, strong smell working environments are not common in financial companies, and in fact, many of our competitors
have already implemented the scent-free policy. To show our professionalism and be in line with the industry, our firm should
practice this rule as well. In this way, our clients and business partners would feel more comfortable while they are visiting us.
Finally, this policy will make our employees focus on their tasks instead of their appearances. On average, a worker who
consumes perfumes needs to use the restroom regularly to reinforce the scent. If we have a scent-free policy in place, they will
make the best use of their time and boost their performance.
In conclusion, the scent-free policy is a positive change for our company. (195)

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to introduce my company ABC and our newly released product.
ABC is a rapidly growing company in the fashion industry that founded in 2015. The company focuses on promoting
environmentally friendly clothing for kids. In the past five years, our team has introduced several product lines that are
extremely popular in the North American market. It is also worth mentioning that our revenue has reached $15 million this year,
which makes us in the top 100 kids clothing brand.
Last week, we released a traditional Chinese-style raincoat. The new coat comes in two colors and is equipped with multiple
waterproof pockets. Besides the overall elegant look, the coat is made 100% of natural rubber. This type of material is not only
eco-friendly but also has zero negative impact on children's health. Anyone who cares about our next generation will appreciate
our design, and they will be our primary target.
As part of the marketing and promoting strategy, we want to invite one of your editors to draft a news story about our product.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
Yours faithfully,
Eddie Wang

While many arguments tend to explain why we should have a paperless workplace, in my opinion, the benefits of keeping a few
printers in the office would outweigh its drawbacks for several reasons.
Although the internet and electronic devices have decreased the demand of papers, there are some situations that hard copy
documents are inevitable. For example, as the leader of the finance department, I work closely with the financial institutes.
Most of the banks use DocuSign, but some of them do not accept electronic signatures. Therefore, I must send the original
documents with hand signatures to meet their requirement. If all the printers are removed from our office, that would become
an obstacle for my daily work.
Besides the compliance requirement reason, printers can also improve our efficiency. Most of our staff can use computers to
send and reply emails but make complicated editing sometime could be challenging. They prefer to print out the document and
use pen or pencil to mark on papers. To ensure the overall productivity of the company, we should provide a printer for those
who need it. In that way, they can make the best use of their time.
In conclusion, I believe the paperless policy should be postponed at this point. (208)

Dear [Recipients Name],
We would like to invite you to attend the annual Benefit Ball. Guests this year include local public figures
such as Senator Cole and Governor Coleman, as well as many television celebrities. The Ball is being held
in the main ballroom at the York Hilton, and will run from 9:00 pm on Friday, June 4.
Every year the annual Benefit Ball raises a lot of money for the York Children's Medical Center, providing
treatment for children who would otherwise have nothing. Last year's ball raised enough money to
provide treatment for almost a thousand local children. It has been a tradition that is eagerly anticipated,
and it is for an excellent cause.
We do not charge anyone for attending the ball but would ask that generous donations are given to cause.
If you cannot attend but would still like to donate, then your contributions are always appreciated.
It is good to know that with one evening of fun, many hundreds of children can benefit.
Your response is greatly anticipated, and we would ask for a response by May 1.
Sincerely,
While many arguments tend to explain why should add more buses, in my opinion, the benefits of creating a new
route outweigh its drawbacks for several reasons.
First, buying new buses is expensive, and the city’s transportation department will request more funding from the
government. As a result, this financial burden is likely to be shifted to the residents via increasing their tax rate. It is
also unfair to ask those people who never use public transportations to pay extra tax.
Another reason is that there are already have more than enough vehicles on the road, especially during rush hours.
More buses will not only cause more congestions but also will produce more air pollutions in the city.
Finally, allocating some existing buses to create a new route will not make the traffic jam worse but allow the
transportation system to operate more efficiently. As a regular passenger, I always take Bus No.1 from my
apartment to the City Center Station, and there are 14 stops in between. If a new express route can eliminate some
stops, it would certainly save me a lot of commuting time.
To conclude, I believe the best solution is to add a new route. (200)
