Name Khan Academy (also available as an app) https://www.khanacademy.org/ Description Khan Academy is an educational organisation that provides free online lessons, courses and practice exercises of a wide range of academic subjects. This digital resource can be considered student-centred as the works to a greater degree as a coach or facilitator for students to be given instructions and learn in an active and collaborative environment. Khan Academy essentially follows the belief that anyone should have access to free world-class education for parents and teachers. Affordances Khan Academy provides resources for a range of academic subjects such as Maths, English, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer programming, Economics and more. This digital tool is suited for children and young people from K-12, even offering units for students in University students. Accessible on mobile and desktop devices. iOS and Android friendly. Can be utilised by both students and educators. Khan Academy is a free online resource and there is no cost for membership. Khan Academy is intended to be used to help engage and educate students in online interactive units. Example of use In Year 8 science, students are to learn: Cells are the basic units of living things; they have specialised structures and functions (ACSSU149 - Scootle ) Multi-cellular organisms contain systems of organs carrying out specialised functions that enable them to survive and reproduce (ACSSU150 - Scootle ) Khan academy provides libraries for Units for Highschool Biology, specifically a Unit titled “Cells” where Year 8 students can engage with concepts such by learning basic cell structures, cells membrane, Eukaryotic cell structures and Prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
In screenshot below, the students follow a course that includes videos, articles and practice exercises that engage Year 10 students in the foundational concepts of biology. Teachers can track their students’ progress with the “skill summary” on the left side of page, which indicates the total points gained through completing each course in the unit. This will encourage teachers to incorporate online learning in place of traditionally being the sole educator of the subject.
