Task 1 Ali Mihub Fundamentals of Diverse Learners A. 1.Growing up there was a high focus on education. My dad had very high expectations for me and wouldn’t allow me to not stay on track in school. Having parents or family members that have expectations for education is good because it can push you to stay focused and encourage positive interactions with education. This has given me the ability to have high expectations for myself and use the focus and mindset I learned from my parents and allow that to push me to be a better teacher and continue learning daily. 2. Personally I valued my family and social groups a lot and would tend to socialize and interact with people that I had similar interests with. I valued people that had the same positive mindset in school and wanted to do well in school and prolong our education. As a teacher this experience will allow me to step back and see that groups of kids that are self-motivated and also find the students that need motivation and more attention to get positive outcomes in class. I have firsthand experience of how one’s friend group can affect their mindset and school and would keep an eye out for students who are, or who are in need of, positive influences. 3. I am from a biracial household and culturally my father had very high standards for school and wanted me to go as far in school as possible. This will allow me to understand what some of my students could be experiencing at home so I will have the awareness to treat those situations carefully. Being the child of an immigrant, and first generation American on my dad’s side, I understand the increased pressure from that my second home culture to live out “the American dream,” and to take full advantage of the opportunities provided to me. B. 1. The case that I read was the Elementary case about Ahmed. He is an adopted third grader who lives in a family that primarily speaks Arabic, as that is his native language. His parents and brothers are fluent in both Arabic and English while Ahmed has qualified as a student with Auditory Processing Disorder (ADP). His Parents are very supportive in terms of education and are willing to take him on trips to participate in different activities. Classmates of Ahmed’s have complained of his behavior in regard to touching students while he’s speaking. Ahmed needs to work on phonological awareness skills to manipulate sounds in words. A. Ahmed was born in Syria and adopted at the age of two, that meant that his family spoke Arabic and that he is an English Learner (EL). He is able to hold conversations with classmates and teachers in English but struggles academically in English. This has affected his learning because he is still working towards becoming consistent with reading passages that are longer then 3-4 sentences. B. Ahmed has a very supportive family in the area of his school and education. His family is willing to take trips to further his education and what he can learn. Having a family like that can really help steer a kid in the right direction and maintain certain levels of focus towards
education. Ahmed has two brothers in the family he was adopted into that are fluent in English and Arabic. Having family members that can help him learn and also be a part of his everyday life can help create positive learning experiences. Not to mention that having family members that he can feel comfortable practicing English with, but also be able to relate in Arabic with, is good for both his academic and his emotional development. C. Equity Pedagogy can be defined as the ability for one to be fair in the use of teaching styles that support different learning styles. (Global) I would focus on making Ahmed feel more comfortable around his peers and make his peers more understanding of some of his actions. For example, in the Arab culture it is common to have more physical touch in conversations like Ahmed putting his hands on the arms of the people he is talking to. As a class we could do a get to know your classmates and maybe bring up culture and experiences that we have and that will create a more accepting and aware classroom. We could also discuss cultural norms and identify similarities and differences.
