Module 2 Reflective Prompt – Supporting Health Equity on Campus There are many benefits to the diversity and inclusivity at Texas A&M, such as enhanced learning in the classroom, cultural competence, as well as the inclusive environment the university promotes. Texas A&M is a fairly diverse campus with significant representation from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Among the more prominent non-white demographics, 23% of the student body are Hispanic, 11% are Asian, and 3% are Black ( Student demographics 2022). This diversity enriches the educational experience for all types of students by exposing them to different cultures that may differ from their own. Engaging with peers or faculty with different viewpoints or life experiences may enhance students’ learning experience in the classroom (Donatelle 81). Students may learn to approach complex issues from multiple angles, leading them to become more well-rounded and informed. The diverse campus at Texas A&M promotes cultural competence to its students and prepares them for the increasingly interconnected world they are about to enter. Most of the population is highly influenced by social and cultural groups, and college students are no different (Donatelle 17). Interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds may help students develop cultural competence and global awareness. This is important not only while attending university, but well beyond in the professional world. By gaining cultural competence, students may gain an understanding and appreciation of cultures other than their own, which is crucial to creating a more united and globalized society. Texas A&M’s core values of respect, excellence, leadership, loyalty, integrity, and selfless service set the foundation for inclusivity on campus. Promoting inclusivity on campus creates an environment in which students feel safe. Many campuses, including Texas A&M, also “offer courses that emphasize diversity, have zero tolerance for hate crimes, and train faculty to recognize offenses and act appropriately” (Donatelle 116). When students feel included, safe, and valued, they are more likely to engage with campus culture and succeed in their academics. The supportive campus environment at Texas A&M is essential for all its students’ success. There are many ways in which I have engaged in supporting diversity and inclusion on campus, and I do so mainly through the student organizations I am involved in. I am a member of Feminism 4 Aggies, which is dedicated to promoting equality for all genders in the Bryan/College Station community. Our efforts extend beyond gender issues, as we raise awareness and combat various forms of discrimination, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and more on campus and in our community. In addition to this, I am the digital marketing specialist for my sorority and have made many graphics that promote diversity and inclusion for holidays that celebrate minority groups, have made a conscious effort to showcase diversity on our Instagram, and have even made a separate Instagram account dedicated to promoting
diversity and inclusivity across Greek life. Although most sororities are predominantly white, the one I am part of is the most racially diverse out of any NPC sorority on campus. I am proud of the work I have done to promote diversity and inclusion on campus and hope to continue my efforts in both of these organizations. Works Cited Donatelle, Rebecca J.
