Demonstrate the role the caregiver plays in guiding the behaviour of school-age children. 3.1. Dramatize and analyze verbal and non-verbal strategies for guiding behaviour in a manner which shows respect for the child and contributes to a positive, supportive environment. The following two children are in your school age program:
Juan is an 8-year-old boy who enjoys playing sports but is overweight and becomes tired quickly. He starts playing all the sports you plan but seems to get “hurt” quickly after the game begins. One of his peers noticed and called him a “faker”. Nathan was visibly upset and he has he chose to stay inside instead of joining in the game. OR
Kiki is an 11-year-old girl who is beginning to go through puberty. You have noticed that lately Kiki has had body odor and her peers have called her “stinker”. Kiki has withdrawn from the group and has sat by herself for the last three days in your program. If approached by a peer, she removes herself to another isolated area. The Gearing Up document has specific goals and outcomes for children in the middle years (this includes school aged children).
Identify one verbal and one nonverbal strategy you could use to support either Juan or Kiki to meet the Gearing Up goal below in a school age program. U
se the content from Chapter 13 in the Kail and Zolner Child Development e-text to demonstrate
how your strategies support the development of school age children.
Gearing Up Goal:
“Ontario children are discovering who they are and who they want to be.
Children need to feel safe and supported in exploring their identity
Children need support to develop their own set of values and to have opportunities to express them in safe and accepting spaces.”
Ensure that your strategies show respect for all the children and contribute to a positive, supportive school age environment.
