Week 2 Discussion Board Watch the TED Talk --  Learn a new culture   (Links to an external site.)   given by Julien S. Bourrelle; bestselling author and Canadian rocket scientist who lived in a variety of cultures. He believes that the opportunity to increase the competitiveness of businesses and to create a better functioning multicultural society by helping people to communicate better across culture exists.  Reflecting on the TED Talk, write a three to five paragraph highlighting the summary of the talk, provide insight about cultural struggles in organizations, and recommendation for how professionals can address cultural issues. Reflecting on the TED Talk, the overall conversation of the TED Talk was that people have different cultures. The speaker went into the differences in the cultures he experienced. These cultural changes could also be applied to an organization in many ways. One of the cultural challenges that I noticed was the changes in culture. For most people, people's actions that have to do with their personal space is very much a cultural ritual. These rituals are very familiar behaviors. It can sometimes be difficult for people to step out of their personal space to invade someone else's personal space to give a cultural greeting. For many people understanding other cultures can be something that brings them out of their comfort zones. What many people can see as something they believe to be weird or different; most time is just something that is of a different culture. It can be uncomfortable for many, but you can open up to understand what other people's familiar looks like once you set aside your normal views. What may be customary to you may be strange and different to others, as the speaker displayed in his speech when he spoke about walking into a café and saying "Hola!" to the store owner. Then everyone replaying back, "Hola!" But when he returned to his homeland and began saying "HeiHei!" everyone looked at him strangely because of how he was greeting everyone. We can learn from this talk and apply it to organizations to be respectful of people's differences. Not everyone you will work with or encounter in the office will have the same cultural views as you do. One must change the lenses of their view on everything to see from other people's perspectives. There will be many times that you may work from another firm that is rich in cultural rituals of their originating country, and if you are going to do business with them, you would have to learn those cultural rituals to show a sign of respect to them. Not doing so could result in deals going south. Being mindful of other people's cultures will help to have a cohesive working environment and, in the end, will be better for everyone.
