CHRO’s Opening Remarks
This discussion with Alice is important for Sharon to present her open remarks
thoughtful regarding the needs of Netflix and what Alice needs to know about the
company’s
needs. So, Sharon began her conversation with Alice by presenting the
needs that Netflix
expects of her with a benefit-oriented dialog. Sharon should start her
negation with statements
the includes the use of principal negotiation method. It is
imperative that Sharon who is the
CHCHRO to separate Alice from the issue at hand
and she can do this keeping in mind both
Alice perspective and the interest of Netflix.
Sharon should start off by asking a question that
can include Alice in it such as: What
are the goals you would like to accomplish and achieve?
This question should open
ended focused while focusing on Alices position not her interest as
this will help create
a conversation that Alice can voice her thoughts and point of view of the
issue at hand
and Sharon can listen to it.
"With the recent changes in your department has created a shift in change, what new
ideas and
objectives we can do to develop and drive change?”
The opening statement is important as it should Alice feelings and to acknowledge any
changes affecting Alice and her department. It is important that Sharon points out that
this
meeting and the conversation they are having is not targeted at her in any
personal way and
acknowledges to Alice that she is a valued employee and that she
has potential. Before Sharon
stated any negations, she should note in her delivery to
recognize the positive things Alice was
involved with during her time at Netflix. Once
Sharon has recognized Alice in positive
communication, she should pause and wait to
see Alices' thoughts on the issue being discussed.
By approaching the issue in this
manner will help Sharon have a better understanding on where
Alice stands and what
her wants and needs are allowing Sharon to better negotiate on what is
best for Netflix
and at the same time she will be to accommodate and assist to Alices needs too.
Case-Specific Negotiating
Alice who is poorly performing and Netflix wants to replace her with someone with the
skills they need and can perform to Netflix liking. Alice will meet with Sharon to prove
her case
that she can still be beneficial to Netflix rather than them terminating her from
the company.
But either why Netflix needs to find someone to replace Alice, but Alice
needs to prove to
Sharon she is worth keeping around by explaining she was unaware
she was not performing to
the expected level if she knew before this, she could have
corrected the issue, and they would
not be here today. By speaking to Sharon
regarding this can show Sharon Alice is willing to put
in the effort she needs to make to
improve her performance. Alice could be a mentor for the
employees entering her
department to make them successful. Also, Alice can be transferred to
another
department where she would be more successful. But either away Alice can decide to
accept what Netflix wants to do with her and she can negotiate a better
severance package that
would be beneficial for both Alice and Netflix because this
can give Alice a chance to walk
away and feeling satisfied with her work time at Netflix
and Netflix will be saving money on
what could cost them to negotiate with them.

integrative interests.
The goal in this situation is to have a “win-win” situation that would be a perfect
integrative interest when Sharon and Alice come to the end of the negotiation process.
It is
important for Sharon and Alice to meet in the middle and find
an equal ground that
would be
realistic for them. This meeting in the middle is when ZOPA would come into
play because if
Sharon and Alice meet in the middle it could benefit both during the
negotiation process.
Open Ended Question
How do you think you improved your performance to meet the
needs expected from the
company and do you feel that the improvement plan is
working for you? (Tara Brooks 5-2
Assignment: Questions for the Negotiating Session
Paper)
Sharon when beginning negotiations with Alice should start it off with
an open-ended
question to help her get as much information as possible.” This open-
ended question asked
so it can give Alice a time to speak her peace and
express how she perceives herself and her
thoughts on how the PIP
is
going.” (Tara Brooks 5-2 Assignment:
Questions for the Negotiating
Session Paper)
Asking this question
will give Alice the opportunity to express her thoughts and explain
her PIP while explaining her thoughts on her progress during this transition. This is
important
that Sharon has a sense for how Alice herself feels about what
is going on and this question will
give Sharon the feeling on how Alice feels she is doing with the
PIP just by the response Alice
gives her
. " Itis also important that Sharon speaks about
Alices progressive both positive and
negative aspects of it. This will help give Alice
an understanding of how she feels about her
PIP that is in place
and progressive with the changes made, this will also allow Sharon to
figure out if
there have been any true improvements made by Alice. (Tara Brooks 5-2
Assignment: Questions for the Negotiating Session Paper). It is important that both
Sharon and
Alice learn what each other's interest is as this is a crucial step in
integrative bargaining. Once this question is asked and answered Sharon can follow up with additional
questions and each of the follow up questions will give Sharon a better understand on
Alices
thoughts and feelings and give Sharon an idea on what Alice perceives what
kind of future she
will have at Netflix or wants.
Closed Question
“Do you agree with the action plan put in place for you? “(Tara Brooks 5-2
Assignment:
Questions for the Negotiating Session Paper)
” Sharon must feel confident in Alices' decision to agree with the action plan
they have
agreed on by the end of this negation process. To confirm this
understanding and end the
meeting for Sharon so she can focus on the next course
of action Alice needs is a “Yes” from
her. If Sharon creates the best solution and both
Alice and the company agree, this could be
the win-win Sharon needed to comply
with the integrative bargaining.”(Tara Brooks 5-2
Assignment: Questions for the
Negotiating Session Paper) At the same time Sharon will be
looking for a response to
confirm Alice and her are both on the same page with moving forward
after Alice
responds Yes to the question at hand.
Alternative Question ” Would
you like to stay here at Netflix and keep the PIP in place or are
you
evaluating other
options outside of Netflix?” (Tara Brooks 5-2 Assignment:
Questions for the Negotiating
Session Paper) The alternative question gives Sharon the ability to see how Alice herself perceives
herself
under her performance improvement plan. “Here this question needs
to let Alice understand
her PIP and let it sink in so it can allow her the choice if
she wants to stay with Netflix, what
her other options are, or cut ties and move on.
By asking an alternative question this will give
Sharon a conclusion if that PIP in
place is working for Alice. By Sharon understanding what
Alices intentions are with
her future will help Sharon decide if Alices presence at Netflix is
win-win solution.”
(Tara Brooks 5-2 Assignment: Questions for the Negotiating Session Paper)
At the end
of the day Sharon has the final choice over any future Alice has with Netflix or a
competitor of Netflix.it is important regarding the PIP that Sharon collects all the information
needs so she can determine if Alice is progressing in the direction that will be best outcome for
both Alice and Netflix. So, Sharon can decide to continue Alices
employment or its time to part
ways.
The alternative question gives Sharon a better idea and answers the question if the
PIP is
working in improving Alices improvement or not. This question also shows Alice
that Sharon is
showing interest in how Alice feels her PIP is going or not. It is important
that Sharon collects
all the information and facts on Alices improved performance plan
progress as this will benefit
both Sharon and Alice when they end the negotiations.

” How do you feel about the PIP, and do you feel it has had a positive effect?
Do you feel
the PIP in place is helping you excel in your position, or do you
think another position within
the company would be a better fit?” (Tara Brooks 5-2
Assignment: Questions for the
Negotiating Session Paper)
The all-time goal for Sharon is to get rid of the PIP and for Alice
to come into
agreement
the PIP
is not working in improving her performance.” Sharon is asking
questions focused on need and
this will make it so that Alice does not have any
other option but to answer the leading
question asked directly. Alice might feel like
she does not have a choice and has her back
pinned to the wall even though she
knows she has other options to inquire about other than
the PIP. Alices knows she
is risk of losing her position/job at Netflix and by following
Sharon and agreeing to
her conditions.” (Tara Brooks 5-2 Assignment: Questions for the
Negotiating Session
Paper) If she says Yes to the question being asked might lead to her being let, go and if she
says no may give Sharon the feeling that she is being difficult by not agreeing with
Sharon.
“This can give Alice a sense of hope that agreeing with Sharon she
a chance to stay with
Netflix using a different plan of action that could be in her
favor and a win- win solution.
Sharon needs develop a leading question that will have
Alice sway in Sharons direction to
agree with her that the PIP is not working, and
the situation is not a fit for her here at Netflix
anymore, so it is time to part ways.”
