S OURCE E VALUATION A CTIVITY In-person or synchronous labs: You will do this activity in small groups during your class for participation and attendance points. First, select a speech topic for this activity, whether it is one given by your instructor or is one selected by your group that someone is considering for their speech. As a group, 1) create a shared Google Doc or a Word doc in OneDrive/Sharepoint/Teams that you can use to work through this activity together; 2) go to the InfoGuide ( http://infoguides.gmu.edu/COMM100-101 ) or https://library.gmu.edu/ , and 3) work through the questions below together. You will create a shared document together as a group as you work through this activity instead of responding to the prompts here. When you are finished, type the names and email addresses of each group member into the file. When you are finished, save the file as a Word file and email it to your professor to earn attendance and participation points for the class if requested. Fully asynchronous courses: This activity is not a required assignment, but is a useful exercise that you can work through to help you evaluate your sources as you prepare for your explanatory speech. The activity: The goal of this activity is to start finding sources for your explanatory speech and practice writing source citations in APA format. The second goal is to evaluate your sources and learn how to identify indicators of source credibility. Use the template on the following page to type up your results and upload your files to Blackboard. For this assignment, do the following: 1. Our communication reference librarian has compiled a research guide to help you find sources for the speeches that you will do in this class. Go to this COMM 100/101 InfoGuide on the GMU library website at http://infoguides.gmu.edu/COMM100-101 . On the upper left-hand corner, you will see several green tabs that you will use to navigate this page. Start by browsing through the information in the first four tabs. 2. Select one of each of the following three types of sources: a peer-reviewed journal article, a popular press newspaper or magazine article, and a credible website. Using what you learned from the InfoGuide, find your source and write a correct APA citation for the source that you selected. 3. In the InfoGuide, read through the information in the “Evaluate Sources” tab. Does your source pass the CRAAP test? Summarize your findings. 4. What types of support materials are included in your source that might be useful for your speech (numbers and statistics, examples, etc.)?
