Leadership wk6 discussion post 5
Discuss different communication styles. Include examples of situations that call for different communication styles.
In our book it talks about 4 different communication styles; there is assertive, aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive. The preferred and healthiest communication style for professional nurses is said to be assertive. An individual who possesses an assertive style of communication, usually seeks for a win-win solution by being honest and direct while valuing and respecting others views. It is the most effective style of communication but is difficult for many individuals to develop. Aggressive communication may use honesty but in a mean and hurtful way. They are known to make decisions for themselves and others and cares about coming out as “the winner”. Instead of resolving conflict aggressive communication usually makes it worse. Passive communication style allows others to make decisions for them hoping to
avoid confrontation and difficult situations. Passive aggressive communicators are a mix of both.
They avoid direct confrontation while manipulating others to get what they want. They win by making others look bad in situations by undermining others and playing the victim. Reference:
