1 Week 1 Assignment Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen The University of Arizona Global Campus GEN499: General Education Capstone Dr. Ta-Tanisha Essex March 13 th , 2023
Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen It takes effort from people of different parts of the globe to make the world a favorable place with minimal harmful issues. Global citizenship is recgonzing oneself as both a citizen of a native country and a citizen of the world. It is emcompassing a global-centric mindset; firmly believing that global societal issues must be addressed and managed by nations working harminously together, rather than one single government attempting to tackle issues. As Albert Einstein said, “we can’t solve our problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them,” which emcompasses the belief that we should think on a larger scale ( Taubenfeld, 2022). Hence, this paper will explore the distinction between globalism and globization, varying defnitions and outcomes of global citizenship from theorists, the use of technology as a global citizen, and educational courses that has shaped my development in becoming a global citizen. Distinction between “Globalism” and “Globalization” The terms “globalism” and “globalization” may be used interchangabely, yet there are significant differences between the two. Gloablism is the basic network of interconnected multinational corporations that expand across the globe. It is the process of understanding how these global connections function in today’s world. Furthermore, globalization is the increase or decrease in the degree of globalism and the dynamic of its changes. For some people, the term globalization means manufacturing processes and bringing economic development to people all over the world (Stucke, 2009). Unfrotanetly, it also has a negoative connotation assosicated with it. Those who are negatively impacted by globization view it as “ruthless explotations by corporations” because their native land can be taken over (Stucke, 2009). Benefitis of Being a Global Citizen In a World of Advanced Technology 2
In the 21 st century, we are living in an advanced technology age where most people utilize electronic devices, social media, and the internet to stay connected with others from all over the world. These practices are beneificial individually, academically, and professionally. As an individual, it’s imperative to be a global citizen to remain culturally aware and respect people from all backgrounds while seeking to improve all aspects of the world we live in, including education, poverty, access to food, climate change, war, diseases, and gun control (Bullard, 2023). These tools are necessary to have an appreciation for diversity, cultural emphaty, and the ability to adapt in different enviornments. My goal as a mother is to make the world a more kind and inclusive online and in real life. As a student, an immervise way to become a global citizen is enganging with international students and faculty online and taking part in a study abroad program. The beneifits include an increase in innovation skills, enhancing problem-solving skills, building on social and collaborative skills, and the potentinal to become fluent in a foreign language. Educational institutions, like UAGC, connect students from all over the world to foster relationships and share knowledge. Global citizenship is also powerful as a professional. Technology grants the opportunity to connect with business partners from around the world. Networking on a global scale means practicing cultural and professional differneces in an effort to expand a company or business. The purpose is to “think big,” and therefore reach as many people as possible for personal, professional, and financial growth. The ultimate goal is to be equipped with the necessary tools to make any client feel comfortable, wether they live next door, or thousands of miles away in another country. Disagreement Between Theorists About Global Citizenship There has been disagreement between therosits about the definition of global citizenship. It largely depends on the discipline and lens that is being used to analyze its concept. For 3

example, the meaning of global citizenship for theorists in physchology can differ for theorists in education. The different labels and perspectives make it difficult to arrive at one clear definition of global citizenship to use across all fields. However, researchers Raysen and Katzarska-Miller explore a few overarching common themes that describe several outcomes of global citizenship. After careful consideration, it is my belief that global citizenship is the concept that explains someone who is aware of their place in the world and understands their duty to respect, engage, and connect with cultures different from their own on a worldwide scale. Rather than limiting oneself to a particular community, global citizens take part in conversations and actions that benefit people all across the world. Outcomes of Global Citizenship Intergroup empathy While all of the outcomes of global citizenship are important, intergroup empathy is one that can be practiced on a daily basis on a small and large scale. From grade school, an important life lesson we are taught is to treat others the way we wish to be treated. Intergroup empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes despite their cultural background being different from your own. This is important in every aspect of life, including being a global citizen because it requires the knowledge of other cultures. The behavior of intergroup empathy encourages global citizens to more deeply understand and care about global issues. The ability is see other people’s problems raises awareness and proactiveness to make a difference. Valuing Diversity The world is made up of billions of people from all different cultural backgrounds, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability status, and socio economic status. Valuing diversity means taking a genuine interest in respecting, engagining with, and learning from different 4
cultures. This is important as a global citizen because it is accepting the realization that the world is made up of many different cultures, therefore diversity should be embraced. Any biases or assumptions should be unlearned and there should be room to discover new foods, experiences, cultures, and people from countries all over the world. It is beneifical to have the mindset of being “interested in learning about the many cultures that have existed in this world” (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). It is not beneifical to limit oneself in regards to diversity because there is little to no room for development or growth as a global citizen with a closed-off mindset. Personal Experiences as a Global Citizen First Personal Example on Intergroupy Empathy As a former Emergency Medical Technican in New York City, I have come across people of all backgrounds. There were some calls I responded to where there was a language barrier because the patient was from another country. Oftentimes there were no family members nearby to translate, so I used interpersonal skills to ensure they felt cared for. Despite the cultural differences, it was important to remain empathetic to their medical problems and emergency. I was a medical professional there to carry out my duty, regardless of what country they were from. My position as an EMT taught me the importance of treating everyone with the upmost care and respect, which helped my development as a global citizen. It does not matter where a person is from; if they need help, they should receive that help. I put myself in their shoes and provided high-quality medical care with a genuine, upbeat attitude. Second Personal Example on Valuing Diversity I attended a promedinately white high school where I was one out of ten black students in our graduating class. There were many times I begged my mom to stay home from school because I felt out of place amongst my peers. Although I had gained some friends, the majority 5
of students were seemingly uninterested in learning about other cultures outside of their own. Therefore, my friend Naya and I decided to form the BAS (Brothers and Sisters) club to share discussions on the importance of diversity and inclusion. As the founder of a diversity club, I realize this was the foundation of valuing diversity as a global citizen. My experience of being ostracized made me aware of how other people can feel on a larger scale. No one should be thought of as less worthy due to the color of their skin or where they are from. As an engaged global citizen, it’s imperative to embrace and respect all cultures different from my own. Development in Becoming a Global Citizen Through Educational Courses As an University of Arizona Global Campus online undergraduate student, I have been fortunate enough to take thoughtful and intruging courses throughout my academic journey. Two courses in particular, HCA430: Special Populations and HHS207: Communication Skills for Health & Human Service Personnel has influenced my development in becoming a global citizen. Although I had some prior knowledge, the Special Populations course taught me about vulnerable groups worldwide that need special consideration, including the elderly, disabled, vulnerable mothers and children, homeless individuals, the LGBTQ+ community, and drug and alcohol users. We focused on research from the United Nations and World Health Orgnization explaining the importance of worldwide effort to assist these special populations. The course allowed me to gain a better understanding of how certain people within different parts of the world are affected the same. The second course focused on the importace of cultural awareness as a health and human service worker. I learned the importance of being able to connect with clients of all different backgrounds. As a professional, I learned crucial skills such as effective listening without judgement, empathy, cultural humility, and critical thinking. The lessons have carried into becoming a global citizen willing to partake in actions that positively help the world. 6

Conclusion In closing, global citizens have the capacity to positively impact the world we live in. Through the use of technology, global citizens are able to interact with friends, family, teachers, collagues, and potential business partners. This provides valuable opprutunities to learn new languages and even expand businesses by networking on a global scale. Although theorists have long debated about different meanings of the term, global citizenship is the awareness that people from all across the world are interconnected and responsible for the well-being of one another. Two important outcomes of global citizenship include intergroup empathy and valuing diversity. These valuable outcomes contribute to the core values of being an engaged, respectful, and thoughtful global citizen. Global citizenship helps the make the world a more sustainable and safe place for our generation and future generations to come. 7
