CTQs for Week 10 Question 1: Crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) are organizations that offer pregnant women abortion information, free sonograms, and STD testing (NBC News, 2019). It is important to note that CPCs are not OBGYN offices and the information they offer is not necessarily medically accurate (NBC News, 2019). Women who were interviewed were told that having an abortion could result in breast cancer and increase their chances of death by 10%, basically scaring these women into not having abortions because there is no chance of either of the two by having an abortion (NBC News, 2019). A staff of CPC, Amy in particular, says that the goal of CPCs is to empower those who are abortion-vulnerable to consider continuing with pregnancy or to consider adoption (NBC News, 2019). CPCs are not considered illegal and they are not required to have medical staff, many of them are volunteers (NBC News, 2019). Question 2: Bryant and Swartz argue in their article that CPCs are unethical since they do not provide patient-centered care and offer misleading practices from unlicensed individuals (2018). CPCs only provide services that will result in a woman continuing their pregnancies and do not have abortions as an option (Bryant & Swartz, 2018). They highlight that women go to these clinics because they identify as low-income and often fall into the CPCs traps (Bryant & Swartz, 2018). To operate in a more ethical manner, Bryant and Swartz recommend these centers display clear advertising of what they truly offer in the CPCs instead of misleading them into thinking they can get an abortion there (2018). They also suggest that each state refrain from funding these centers until they can ensure their patients a proper practice of ethical services and licensed medical professionals (Bryant & Swartz, 2018). Finally, they suggest health care professionals should be educated on these centers and on where women can actually go for abortions if they
are seeking one (Bryant & Swartz, 2018). Of these suggestions, I think it has to start with displaying clear advertising because women go in there thinking they can terminate their pregnancies, but are ultimately trapped into thinking they must continue their pregnancy after visiting a CPC. Question 3: If abortions are restricted in a women’s state, they have the option to travel out of state to receive these services. If a woman can afford to travel, she is expected to spend money on the procedure itself, travel, hotel, food, child care (if applicable), and other unexpected expenses (McCann, 2022). It is noted in the article that expenses add up as distance increases and if there are complicated procedures a woman has to go through, such as having medical complications, extended stays, or hospital stays (McCann, 2022). If a woman cannot afford to travel for abortion services, then they will have to continue with their pregnancy. As stated in the article by Badger et al., there is a strong connection between what a state decides to enforce and the health of a mother and her child, especially if they are low-income (2022). It is also mentioned that some states that have restricted or banned abortions have declined an expansion of Medicaid to underserved families, which results in health disparities in these states (Badger et al., 2022). Medicaid pays for births and contraception, which is a huge help to these families who have it, but if they live in a state that has decided to not extend the coverage, it is a problem for them. Families benefit from paid leave and subsidized child care as it has been shown that they have higher mental health and more money (Badger et al., 2022). Taking this away can conflict with raising a baby and having to work. Question 4: When reading the 5th Amendment in the Republican Party platform, I noticed that they mention opposing the use of public funds for the promotion of abortion or to fund organizations that perform abortion services (2016). It also stood out to me that they will not
fund any type of healthcare that covers abortions (Republican Party Platform, 2016). The Republican Party does not support any termination of pregnancies and those organizations that perform them, such as Planned Parenthood. On the other hand, I noticed that when reading the Democratic side they immediately begin their section with a health disparity among African American women and what they will do to save these mother’s lives (Democratic National Committee, 2023). They mention that they will be in favor of any solutions to eliminating health disparities among African-American women (Democratic National Committee, 2023). They will attempt to reduce mortality rates among mothers by expanding Medicaid coverage to a year after giving birth (Democratic National Committee, 2023). After reading both articles, I was able to note some key differences between the two parties and what they each want to accomplish for their people.
