Clinical Field Experience C: Cultural Competence

Soleil Dixon-Widman
January 25, 2023 Part 1: Continued Language Support
We have to get to know our learners as it is essential to us all. ●
I asked Mr. Ransome, "How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within
instruction?"
He replied: To support cultural diversity within instruction, I have students do a show-in-
tell activity. Students must bring something that represents their culture and give a brief presentation to their classmates. ●
I asked Mr. Ransome, "How do you leverage home language and cultural assets?"
He replied: Some ways to leverage home language and cultural assets is to learn about your students through an interest survey. Another option is to utilize google translate to translate small items on their own, discreetly during a low-stakes task or independent work time.
●
I asked Mr. Ransome, "How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs?"
He replied: I show responsiveness to the different needs of my students based on their placement level. Grouping students based on their Can-Do descriptors puts them in
group settings that can help identify their strengths as well as weaknesses is essential with ELL's.
●
I asked Mr. Ransome, "How do you demonstrate an understanding of students' social, emotional, and cultural needs when establishing classroom routines and procedures?"
He replied: By having students give input on our rules and social norms. For example, when going over classroom rules with students, they are more inclined to uphold the rules if they are a part of the ruling process. So the rules are theirs to enforce and follow
collectively ●
I asked Mr. Ransome two final questions. What is your teaching philosophy, and describe his teaching style?
He replied: By focusing on properly-getting learners to review material independently, so they can work better. I like to make learning as meaningful and realistic as possible. As far as my teaching style, I am very visual. Technology has become such a beautiful thing, and I like to explore it with my students, so I can show them how to develop the PowerPoint and resources used in class. Part 2: Reflection
In Mr. Ransome's classroom, he was very visual and hands-on with his students. He made teaching students learning English as their second language look too easy. His class even made songs and dances to remember things, which helped them. YouTube
was also an excellent resource for students as they used it as a learning tool. Mr. Ransome allowed me to help him progress monitor his students by just having a basic conversation with them. We watched how they articulated each word and if they used it correctly. Something else that Mr. Ransome taught me was to modify my speech. I did not know what he meant the first time around, but I understand now. To modify your speech, you have to Speak more slowly, Use gestures with your speech, Model directions or processes, and also it is good to Provide visual aids.
In the future, I will create more content for my learners. I liked the song and dances the learners put together. It was entertaining and engaging for all to see and hear. My cultural understanding is that to know your students is to understand where they came from because that is a part of their identity. The more we know, the more we can bring awareness to other people.
