COMM 277 Week 1 Discussion
Perception
Communicating effectively is something that is important not just in the healthcare setting, but also our own daily personal lives. Clear communication between the healthcare professional and the patient is a must to achieve a successful outcome. Cognitive understanding using their senses as their patients share details regarding their health can lead to better patient outcomes regarding their plan of care. The healthcare professionals must also make sure that the information they are relaying to the patients is understood correctly so that the care the patients are provided is effective (Pérez-Del-Vallín, 2022).
Example
While working in the healthcare industry, I have come into contact with a lot of people from different cultures. I recently spoke with a patient who could only speak Spanish. They were
angry when they went to dialysis and seemed to be directing their anger at the staff. They became more and more irritated, raising their voice even as I tried to explain that I couldn't understand what they were trying to say. Despite the language barrier, it was clear from her motions and voice that she was upset. Rather than extending the conversation that might just end up going around in circles, I had a coworker who was fluent in Spanish to assist me with speaking with the patient.
Change
In that circumstance, I could have simply approached one of the nurses or a coworker who spoke Spanish and suggested that they take care of the patient instead. The patient's ability to communicate and be understood in their native language could help to deescalate the situation.
