VASU SUTARIYA 1. Select a short quote/passage from chapter 6 (include citations from the textbook) . He did not regard himself as a particularly ethnocentric being. In theory he had always extolled the virtues of understanding between persons from widely differing parts of the world. He wanted to see the good, the new and exciting, in other people and cultures but was catching himself getting more and more upset at, in his view, the decidedly irrational India” (Eriksson, 2011) . 2. Explain why you choose this quote. I chose this quote because it poignantly illustrates a common dilemma faced by many individuals who value cultural understanding and diversity in theory, but struggle with it in practice. It captures the contrast between the idealistic vision of embracing different cultures and the real challenges that arise when confronted with cultural practices that seem irrational or difficult to comprehend. 3. Describe how the quote has personal significance. Personally, this quote is significant as it mirrors experiences, I've encountered when interacting with cultures different from my own. While I have always valued and sought to understand diverse cultural perspectives, there have been moments when I've felt perplexed or frustrated by practices that seemed illogical or contradictory to my own cultural norms. 4. Describe One example from your personal experience that demonstrates the meaningfulness of the quote or passage you selected A specific incident that reflects the essence of this quote occurred during my travels to a country with a significantly different culture from mine. Despite my eagerness to embrace the local customs, I found myself struggling with certain social practices and norms that appeared inefficient and illogical from my cultural standpoint.
5. Research One example that relates/demonstrates the meaningfulness of the quote or passage you selected. (include citations) . A relevant example can be found in the experiences of Peace Corps volunteers, as documented in various studies and personal accounts. These volunteers, despite their training and commitment to cultural sensitivity, often report feelings of frustration and confusion when faced with practices and norms in their host countries that contradict their own cultural values or logic. This phenomenon is well-documented in literature, such as in "Culture Matters: The Peace Corps Cross-Cultural Workbook," which explores the challenges volunteers face in reconciling their idealistic expectations with the realities of living in a different cultural environment (Peace Corps Information Collection and Exchange, 2002) .
