Part One: Social Justice (Complete this section in Module Two.)
1.
Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario. [Justice refers to the fair and impartial treatment of individuals under the law. Equality is the uniform distribution of access to resources and opportunities to ensure fairness. Equality ensures everyone receives the same resources. Equity, on the other hand, means fairness and justice in the way that those resources and opportunities are distributed. This means that everyone gets what they need to reach their full potential. Equity acknowledges that everyone is
not the same and that everyone does not start from the same place in life. Fairness is like equity.
Fairness is being just to everyone and treating them without discrimination, partiality, and prejudice. Justice would involve our employer to provide both my colleague and I with work times that would ensure that we do not miss any deadlines or projects. The employer should provide us with impartial treatment and work times that are going to be fair for all the employees. There are issues with fairness in terms of both of us being able to connect during work hours. It is also unfair to give us both deadlines without first thinking about the time zone differences. This affects our equity because we are both unable to work on or complete the project at the same times. I see the equality in this case because we both have the same exact job. However, the employer should think about equity in this case. Equality and equity work together to promote fairness and justice. Equity works to identify the problems and solve them in pursuit of justice. Equity would give all the employees what they need regarding the work process and procedures. The employer will not only have to consider the time zones, and work hours but, also investigate the normal working hours in India as well. In America, the work hours are an average of eight hours and in India it could be something completely different.]
2.
Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario. Bias can influence the employer. If, for example, the employer has bias against foreign people, then the situation would remain unjust if the employer did not fix the situation because of his/her biases. If I were to have biases against foreign people, then that could impact not just my
co-worker’s work performance, but mine as well.
3.
Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social justice.[
Narratives are more than just stories people tell, they are the truth that shape our lives or, rather
the ideas that we accept as truths Narratives shape our perceptions, our perceptions form our realities, and those realities influence our thoughts. Very strong narratives or stories become rooted in people thus affecting our choices, actions, and decisions. Narratives impact our ability to look at the core principals of social justice without altered perceptions.
4.
Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario.
The core principle of equity applies in this scenario. This core principle centers on the socioeconomic identity to ensure people receive what they need. Equity comes down to how resources are distributed to groups of people. Equity would give all the employees in this scenario what they need regarding work processes and procedures. Equity also acknowledges that everyone in the workplace does not all start from the same place in life and that we all have
different needs. Equity recognizes that people have different needs at different points in their lives because some groups experience barriers due to race, gender, and/or socioeconomic status. Equity seeks to understand the different needs of all the employees in our workplace. Equity in this situation means that the employer would have created work times that would meet both my co-worker’s and I’s needs.
Part Two: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration
1.
Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal communication with people in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
[Cultural awareness can be defined as being aware and respecting the impacts and influences of different cultures. Cultural differences stem from our different perceptions, which determines how we communicate with people of other cultures. Having cultural awareness will teach me to understand how different cultures may help me in terms of communication and collaboration and that would help me at my workplace. People with different cultural backgrounds communicate using different styles Their language, words, gestures, and phrases may be different than what I am used to. Cultural awareness will help me to understand my coworkers better who are from the Indian culture. Being culturally aware will enhance interpersonal skills between my coworkers and me. It will help me become sensitive to their emotions and make communication more effective between us all.]
2.
Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
[My coworker is from India and her cultural background has different communication styles than
mine. Their language, words, gestures, and phrases may be different than what I am used to in the American culture. Having cultural differences can have effects on communication so if I expose myself to diverse backgrounds then I will know how to approach and speak to my coworker from India. What could be normal in the American culture could be taken offensively to people from the Indian culture. People from different cultures also have different approaches to delivering and inquiring about information.]
3.
Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
[Understanding diverse cultures improves communication and interactions among employees collaborating in a workplace. For example, certain words or topics may be considered taboo to the Indian culture but acceptable in the American culture. Having knowledge of the Indian culture and their ways will prevent conflicts at work between my coworkers and myself. Another aspect that could be affected by culture is decision-making. America focuses on empowering people to make their own decisions. In the Indian culture it could be that the seniors and men that tend to make decisions of duties and such. If perhaps, my coworker is much older than me and we had something to collaborate at work, then, respectfully I would allow him to delegate the duties at work out of respect for his culture and to ensure that working with him goes smoothy in the future. 4.
Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Three.)
[With this scenario I would demonstrate cultural fluency by understanding the basic norms and perspectives of my coworker from India. I will need to recognize cues in how my coworker communicates. I will educate myself a little on some of the basic customs and norms of people in
India and how they work. People in India have different social norms than we do here in America. I will need to become familiar and get a basic understanding of the social norms in India. I should also learn what the normal working hours are in India. Is it eight hours like it is here in America? Is she working during the day or overnight? Having cultural fluency will allow me to increase my own self-awareness and become familiar with certain actions and behaviors
that could be offensive to my coworker. I will need to move beyond my cultural norms and recognize my own implicit biases as well. I need to gain intercultural competence and sensitivity. I can gain this by being truly interested and open-minded about my co-worker’s Indian culture. I will be observant and learn about the cultural differences and similarities of the Indian culture verses the American culture. I will not allow any stereotypes that I may have heard to interfere my thought processes. Lastly, I will need to appreciate my coworker’s culture just as much as I appreciate my own. 5.
Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness. (Complete this section in Module Three.)
[Cultural self-awareness is described as the sensitivity that one individual possesses regarding another person's culture. Cultural self-awareness grows by recognizing cultural experiences and sensitivity to cultural elements in those experiences. Being culturally fluent will help me understand others better, plus benefit my own self-awareness, which will help me connect better with others. Cultural fluency allows me to increase my self-awareness by allowing me to be familiar with my actions and behaviors that may be offensive to my co-worker who works oversees in India. I can be culturally fluent by understanding my co-worker and learning more about the Indian culture. This will benefit my own self-awareness, which will help my coworker and I to connect better. Self-awareness is an important step in becoming culturally aware. If I do not understand myself, I could not possibly understand others. I can relate better to people with cultural differences as I start understanding myself better. This will result in more cultural connection and less cultural conflict. I need to be mindful when approaching, engaging, observing, communicating, and understanding different cultures.

Part Three: Communication Strategies to Navigate Conflict (Complete this section in Module Five.)
1.
Describe the components of the conflict represented in the scenario.[
The conflict my coworker and I have is that we both work for the same company, but we live in different time zones. She lives across seas in India which is 10.5 hours ahead of United States’ time. My colleague and I have trouble communicating effectively because many times we are often unavailable during each other’s work hours. This caused us to miss important deadlines in our work projects, which leads to frustration. We could not seem to ever collaborate at the same
time because of the time difference and if we ever did then it was for a short period of time because her day would be over, and it would be time for her to get off and go home. This unfortunately caused us to turn in projects late.]
2.
Describe different interpersonal communication strategies that can be used in conflict resolution
I would apply restorative practices and conflict navigation to address the conflict and find a better way to move forward at work. Restorative practices in group settings promote social and emotional learning encouraging healthy problem solving and conflict resolution skills, which also
supports trusting relationships and effective communication. I will never know when a conflict arises but, conflicts are bound to happen. When conflicts do arise, I can be prepared for them by
using conflict resolution or restorative practices. Effective communications during conflicts are important and makes a difference in finding a resolution and solving conflicts. I would like to share some communication strategies to use while trying to resolve a conflict. First strategy I’d like to share is to use active listening. This means being fully focused on what the other person is
saying. Listen to them without interrupting while they are talking. Use some reflective listening. Reassure the other person that you are listening and are understanding what they are saying by summarizing what the other person said and repeating it back to them in your own words. Some
other strategies are, use “I” statements, be mindful of non-verbal communication, practice empathy, and navigate conflicts in a respectful and constructive manner]
3.
Choose an appropriate communication strategy you would employ in the scenario. Include an explanation of why you chose that communication strategy.[
Communication strategies that I would use in the conflict situation in the scenario would be empathy and considering others will help prevent even more conflict in the future. Being vulnerable would help both me and my coworker out because speaking up and letting each other know our thoughts on something at work will help us out in the future knowing what we like or dislike. Vulnerability is necessary for meaningful connections at work. Conflict resolution requires both parties to be vulnerable and willing to move toward a resolution. If there is a deviant among my coworkers, I will stay mindful of their thoughts and opinions, and remember that what is normal to me may not be normal to others. I chose empathy as my communication strategy because I think people should have more empathy and consider other people’s thoughts more often and there wouldn’t be so much hate in the world. And vulnerability because it is important to not be afraid to speak up and express your personal thoughts and opinions.]
4.
Describe the potential challenges of communication in the scenario.
With this scenario, there would be a major communication challenge because my coworker is from India, and she speaks a totally different language than I do. If perhaps, she does speak English, then that would be almost impossible to collaborate with her unless we looked up everything on a translator but at a workplace that would take up too much time. The coworkers
would most likely speak English so if we collaborate over the phone a challenge of mine may be that with her accent it would be hard to understand her so I will need to really be focused on what she is saying, and probably ask her to repeat herself. Then there is the time zone difference, so we would have to come up with a plan and work routine that works for the both of
us and allows us, that way we get our projects done in time.]
5.
Describe the benefits and challenges of using restorative practices to navigate the conflict in the scenario.
Restorative practices will help with collaborative decision-making processes that build trust and encourage employee engagement and development. Restorative practices promote social and emotional learning by encouraging healthy problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, which also supports trusting relationships and effective communications at the workplace. Restorative practices bring everyone together in a safe environment affected by the conflict. It gives us the opportunity to express each of our issues and concerns. Good restorative practice techniques in the job place results in higher performance, collective collaboration, and greater accountability. Restorative practices and interventions require adequate time, space, and resources. Restorative
practices will take some time and will not fix the problems over night. Preparation and dialogue can take up a considerable amount of time. Sometimes it can take up several hours, especially if there are a lot of people involved. There could be times when agreements made during restorative practices end up not being followed. Agreements not being followed could be a sign that the restorative practices are simply not working, and changes may be needed. Unfortunately, there could also be times where restorative practices just simply do not end up working at all.
