JOHNSON 1 FAITH JOHNSON MAPPING THE CONTROVERSY OCTOBER 27, 2023 Is Artificial Intelligence Taking Teachers Jobs Are robots going to replace teachers? Since the rise of technology, this new generation has been using artificial intelligence and automation for everything. Cheating on tests, writing essays, studying, and learning new things in general. An app that is popular at the moment is chat gpt, and another app that is popular that people are learning new stuff every day is TikTok. Mark Powell has a masters degree in educational administration and is former vice president of the San Diego county board of education. He is the president of Parents for Quality Education and has been a teacher, vice principal and dean of students in the San Diego unified school district. Mark Powell believes that technology could eventually replace school teachers. Jing Liu is an assistant professor of policy at the University of Maryland College Park. Dora Demszky is an assistant professor of educational data sciences at the Stafford graduate of education. Heather C.Hill is the Hazen-Nicole professor of teacher, learning and practice at Harvard graduate school of education. These stakeholders believe AI can make education more personal. These stakeholders Jing Lui, Dora Demszky, Heather, C.Hill also believe teachers are not replaceable, but AI can help them become better teachers. Momo Bernard is an education specialist at the world bank. He is from Cameroon and previously worked as a training and communication specialist at the United Nations (TCILO). Momo Bernard also believes the same thing Jing Lui, Dora Demszky, and Heather C. Hill Robots or AI is not coming to replace teachers, but to “upgrade them“. In Mark Powell's article, he talks about how artificial intelligence can replace traditional teaching models. He goes on about how it is already being used in many ways, and detects if
JOHNSON 2 FAITH JOHNSON MAPPING THE CONTROVERSY OCTOBER 23, 2023 students are struggling and what they are struggling with. Powell states that some stakeholders believe that artificial intelligence can replace teachers very quickly. They quote “AI driven systems can replace teachers and delivering content grading assignments and even providing emotional support, (Powell) Powell also applies that other state stakeholders have an opposite opinion on the situation they quote “AI should be seen as a compliment complementary tool, that enhances teaching a replacement for human educators “(Powell) Those same stakeholders, believe that AI is a helpful tool, but is not replacing teachers. They feel the teacher is still doing it’s job especially in the roles of guiding their students, gaining a teacher relationship with them, and just talking to them in general, whether it be how they feel or just a conversation. Powell feels as technology gets better very soon teachers will be replaced. In the not so distant future. Jing Lui, Dora Demszky, and Heather C. Hill's opinion is that artificial intelligence is an assistant to a teacher. In their article they talk about artificial intelligence that can support a teacher and help them when it is needed. If a teacher is busy or has too much on his plate, they will be able to help them with small tasks. These stakeholders think that AI should give teachers feedback, they feel as if feedback can help a teacher improve their teaching. They quote different from evaluative feedback, this kind of feedback and some modify teachers' thinking or behavior to improve their teaching for example. The teacher asked open ended questions that elite students higher order, thinking teachers effectively engage students from all backgrounds and not just some teachers need feedback opportunities on these other topics to reflect upon their strengths as well as areas, needing improvement“ (Lui, Demszky, and Hill) Even though Lui, Demszky, and Hill feel that teachers need feedback. They also know it’s not easy to get that high-quality
JOHNSON 3 FAITH JOHNSON MAPPING THE CONTROVERSY OCTOBER 23, 2023 feedback. Getting high-quality feedback is very time-consuming and costs a lot of money. These stakeholders also talked about how principals have to step in and do classroom walk-throughs, and some principals even tend to be generous and comment on teachers instructions, but most fail to provide information to help teachers make improvement or their feedback is not enough to help teachers improve. Lui, Demszky, and Hill explain how their group of scholars with enterprise and education, linguistics, economics and computer, science envisioned their designed AI power feedback tool where the AI robot could record an audio of the teacher lesson plan that she, or he taught their students. It could quickly program it into its cloud and analyze the audio and after analyzing the audio, it will give the teacher feedback on what the teacher needs to work on. They call the tool M-Powering Teacher (M stands for Machine), during the past two years, they tested the effectiveness of the M – powering teachers. They found remarkable, consistent results across their studies. Mama Bernard states “AI won’t be replaced – – but a classroom revelation is coming '' Momo Bernard supports his claim by saying he agrees with AI itself. Bernard talks about how he asked Google controversial chatbot Weather, artificial intelligence will replace teachers. He said it said “it is unlikely that AI will completely replace teachers in the near future“ Bernard said he completely agreed. In Bernard's article he talks about a lot of different things. The first thing he talks about is preparing students to ask better questions in this section. He talks about how a young university official told him and his colleagues that they were trying to see if their classes will prepare students for technology AI. Bernard feels that for now, or he just will have to think like that but states at a deeper level machines become better at answering questions educator should guy students to ask better questions (Bernard) Bernard

JOHNSON 4 FAITH JOHNSON MAPPING THE CONTROVERSY OCTOBER 23, 2023 feels if this change does come around, people shouldn’t just help students to learn but it also inspires them to love lifelong learning. After he talked about preparing students to ask better questions he did talk about helping avoid Echo chambers. In this part of the article, he talks about how AI is going to worsen the problem of misinformation. Bernard feels anyone with Internet connection will be able to produce solid arguments or any subject simply by inputting a prompt into the AI platform.. he also feels that Eco chambers could grow if we don’t train the new generation to have a peaceful conversation with people they don’t agree with. The last section that Bernard talks about is using AI as a teacher assistant, which is similar to what Lui, Demszky, and Hill talks about in their article. Bernard feels that students learn better if teaching is personalized but teachers now have not done that so Bernard feels AI could change this. He also feels that getting high-quality feedback will also benefit the students. helping them learn better and helping the teachers teach better for a certain student or for the class in general.
