1 Teacher Interview #1 Tyneshia Peppers William Carey University EDU 536: Classroom Management Dr. Deidra Gammill September 13, 2023
2 I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Karen Coney, who has been an educator for 19 years in the Hattiesburg School District. Ms. Karen taught all subjects in her first year, 4th-grade ELA, as well as 4th-grade Math now. Ms. Coney’s struggles with classroom management at the beginning of her career were little to no struggles because of how she went into her first her. She did not let her students know that it was her first year, which lead to taking her no time to feel comfortable. She believes it is critical to establish and teach rules and procedures at the beginning of the school year. Ms. Coney states, “There is no significant learning that can take place without rules and procedures.” Ms. Coney believes that positive praise, building professional relationships, modeling, and more are essential classroom management strategies that would deem successful in the classroom. Also, she believes when students mess up, reiterate the procedures to them to ensure they are aware of what is expected of them. She believes in not punishing her entire class for the mistakes of one student, because it is not fair to all students. Ms. Coney has had to rethink her whole group/small group classroom management strategy. Her class is large, and the students tend to get rowdy at times. She finds that whole group works best for her class this year. Ms. Coney works on her lesson plan throughout the week. This takes place every day. Things she sees through the day can be seen while she is instructing a lesson. As far as PLCs, she is a part of the 4 th grade team PLC. She used to be a facilitator up until last year, when she switched over to Math. She currently is a part of PLCs just not a facilitator. In the past, Ms. Coney states, “Collaborative grouping in her classroom has been an experience. You can allow the students who are strong leaders to have helping hands. Do not have more than 1 or 2 and make sure to plan the groupings well.”
3 Ms. Coney could not choose one resource to recommend. She believes the smartboard, individual student laptops, i-Ready, hands-on activities, and visuals are all resources any teacher could implement within their classroom. Yearly assessments as well because the school Ms. Coney is at now is in a data driven district. The advice Ms. Coney gave was very inspirational and uplifting. She said,” Start from day one setting rules, procedures, and modeling all through the year. Put the first things first. Do not take anything personal, set rules and build positive relationships. If you say it, mean it. Make positives parental contacts, so that the parent does not only hear the negative all the time. Have rewards that are tangible. Give jobs, responsibility and rules. The students are all leaders. Last thing students must know you care before they care.” Interviewing Ms. Karen Coney was an honor. She is experienced and great at what she does. I have learned so much about her within this interview and cannot wait to continue building a professional relationship with her. She is a great mentor and role model to look up to in the teacher world. If I could choose someone to do this interview, I would choose her all over again.
