Barton Communication Skills and Assessment Jared G. Barton BUS600: Management Communications With Technology Tools University of Arizona Online Global Campus Professor Paul Frankenhauser Date Submitted: January 13, 2024 1
Barton Effective communication is a vital aspect of personal and professional interactions. Many individuals encounter situations where communication becomes challenging, emphasizing the significance of enhancing both written and verbal communication skills. In this context, a crucial step is to identify and assess one's communication abilities through a formative, evaluative, or diagnostic assessment. For this purpose, I completed a self-assessment survey to determine my communication skills and to determine what I can improve upon. This paper aims to delve into a self-analysis of communication skills, employing an identified assessment. The following discussion will provide insights into the chosen assessment, including its name and source, an exploration of identified communication gaps, recognition of specific areas requiring additional training, and a strategic analysis of how improvements in communication can pave the way for professional advancement. The journey towards effective communication is not only a personal development endeavor but also a key factor in fostering success in the professional realm. To start, I scoured the internet for a few reputable sources in which I could take this communication assessment from. In the end, I decided to take an assessment from two sources: Skillsyouneed.com and from Blocksurvey.com. The assessment from skillsyouneed.com offered a very in-depth and extensive questionnaire to understand the communication styles of the participant. In this assessment, I was asked questions from not only my verbal communication methods or actions, but also in my emotional intelligence, listening skills, and group communication. In all, I scored above average in verbal communication and listening skills, average in emotional intelligence, and below average in group communication. On the other hand, the assessment from blocksurvey.com offered a very generic 16 question survey. My results form that assessment classified me as an “effective communicator”. 2
Barton Based on my results, I am comfortable with most of them. The one area where I would like to improve is on group communication. When reading my results on group communication, the following prompt was given on reasons why I scored so low on the assessment: “Based on the answers you provided you are not particularly confident about communicating in group situations and your score is below average. In most careers, and while at school or university, there will be occasions when you need to participate effectively in a group situation. When possible, you should work on building your confidence around other people, and practice communicating in social and family settings. You may find that working on your verbal communication and listening skills will also help to boost your confidence.” (skillsyouneed.com 2024). To determine reasons why I scored low in this area, I took an introspective look at myself and my behaviors in group settings. Additionally, there are suggested articles and materials at the end of my assessment to explore ways how to improve that score and become a more effective group communicator. Going into reasons why I am not the best communicator in groups, at an introspective look, I am not a group collaboration or speaking person. This is mainly due to my introverted nature and along with my speech impediment. As far as possible reasons pointed out by the assessment, this may stem from low self-esteem and lack of group cohesiveness. To heighten my self-esteem, I’m recommended to identify and challenge my negative beliefs, identify positive things about myself, build positive relationships, give myself a break, engage in things that would make me happy, and improve physical and mental health (skillsyouneed.com, 2024). Having an improved self-esteem will, in hand, allow myself to be more confident to participate in groups or teams and communicate my thoughts and feelings on the subject matter. In short, I 3
