COMS 101 P ERSUASIVE S PEECH O UTLINE T EMPLATE COMS 101 Section B13 Febuary 26, 2024 Organization: Problem-Cause-Solution pattern. Audience analysis: My audience consists of two Caucasian women, one in her middle 40s and the other in her late 20s, and one Caucasian man, also in his middle 40s. All individuals are Christians. Topic: The problem I aim to address is abortions all around the United States. General Goal: To persuade Specific Goal: I want to inform my audience about the social problem of abortions and to persuade them that the United States has implied some laws in certain state pretaining to abortions. As well as something that God values according to Scripture. (Exdous 20:13; Leviticus 20:17; James 2:11) I. Get Attention Did you know that within the first 10 months of 2023, there was an estimate of roughly 878,000 abortions? Abortions have been on a rise since the laws have changed nationwide! II. Establish Relevance Everyone 1 in 4 American women will have an abortion by the age of 45. III. Establish Credibility As a woman, I have read things, I wasn’t familiar with and seeing how much other woman have difficulties with pregnancy or their situation, I am aware of why they have chosen to have an abortion. IV. State the Thesis If you want to understand more about abortions and the laws that are in place, then listen to this important information I am about to tell you. Page 1 of 4
COMS 101 V. Preview Your Main Points During these next few moments, I will explain to you how abortion has been on the rise since 2020, then I will inform you about why women get abortions, next I will enlighten you on the way our country has handled abortions, and lastly I will tell you why God doesn’t accept abortions. Transition: So, lets get into how abortions have been rising. Body: I. Main Point 1. Abortion has been on the rise since 2020 . A. “ In 2020, a majority of the abortions reported by Virginia were performed on women in their twenties, with 26 percent on women ages 20 to 24 and 29 percent on women ages 25 to 29. Thirty-three percent were on women in their thirties, and four percent were on women aged 40 or older. Seven percent of the abortions were on girls under the age of 20.” (Longbons, Steupert) B. (Lon gbons, Steupert) C. “The institute, which collects data by contacting every known abortion provider in the country, reported that the number of abortions increased to 930,160 in 2020, from 862,320 in 2017. The number increased in every region of the country: by 12 percent in the West, by 10 percent in the Midwest, by 8 percent in the South and by 2 percent in the Northeast.” (Belluck) Transition: This leads me to explain why women believe they need to get an abortion. II. Main Point 2. There are many reasons why some women fill the need to get an abortion. A. Women tend to get abortions because they know the pregnancy is dangerous to both themselves and the fetus. B. Women also tend to get abortions because they were in an abusive relationship. C. Another reason women tend to get abortions is because they were sexually assaulted/raped. Page 2 of 4
COMS 101 Transition: This leads me to my next point, on how the United States handles abortions. III. Main Point 3 . The way our country has decided to handle abortions worldwide is outrageous. A. Abortion is currently banned in 14 states, and a significant amount of other states are restricting access to abortions, because of the Roe vs Wade case. B. For instance, in the state of Texas, “The Act provides that a “person may not knowingly, perform, induce, or attempt an abortion” unless the mother has “a life-threatening physical condition aggravated by, caused by, or arising from a pregnancy that places [her] at risk of death or poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function unless the abortion is preformed or induced.” Tex. Health & Saftey Code § 170A.002(a)-(b). (Praxton) C. A significant amount of states are also placing laws in effect to help protect their abortion rights. Transition: Now, onto my final point. IV. Main Point 4. God doesn’t accept abortions. A. Exdous 20:13 (ESV) B. Leviticus 24:17 (ESV) C. James 2:11 (ESV) Transition: This leads me to my conclusion. Conclusion: I. Summarize Your Thesis and Main Points Now, I hope you understand more about abortions and the laws that are in place around the world. From, listening to me talk about how much abortions have risen, to why women feel the need to get abortions, then by the way our country handles these types of situations, and lastly why God doesn’t accept abortions. II. End with a Clincher Now you understand about abortions, why women get abortions, how our country handles abortions, and why God doesn’t accept abortions. Rougly 1 and 4 women experiences an abortion by the time they are 45. Page 3 of 4
